LAHORE: The Tehrik-i-Istiqlal chief, Air Marshal (Retired) Asghar Khan today [July 6] said that if President Bhutto “makes any anti-Pakistan commitment” during his coming visit to the United States, it would not be binding on the people of Pakistan. Asked to elaborate … he said that under the US pressure Mr Bhutto might commit something which is not in the interest of the country such as recognition of Bangladesh and confederation with India. —Staff correspondent

[Meanwhile, as reported by our staff reporter from Karachi,] all the eight People’s Party and two Opposition candidates won in the Senate elections from Sind … with the PPP Secretary-General, Mr J.A. Rahim … [winning] by the narrowest margin. There were in all 10 seats for the Senate from Sind. While the People’s Party had set up eight candidates, the Opposition had two candidates. They all won. The only Independent candidate in the run, Mr Ahmed Mian Soomro, lost. Earlier, three other independent candidates, Mr Mahmoodul Haq Usmani, Mr Ahmed E. H. Jaffar and Mr Abdul Khaliq Allahwala had retired from the contest.
