KARACHI: A man, holding dual nationality, who shot dead a young policeman over stopping him for suspicion of ‘kidnapping’ a girl in his car in Defence late on Monday night, escaped abroad by taking advantage of his second passport, police said on Tuesday.

DIG-South Irfan Baloch said the police informed airport authorities, but they didn’t know the suspect also had a Swedish passport, which he used to take a Turkish flight to escape.

“He fled the country on Tuesday morning by using his Swedish passport,” confirmed South-SSP Syed Asad Raza. “But we will bring him back,” he vowed.

Earlier, the Clifton police registered a murder case against suspect Khurram Nisar for killing police constable Abdul Rehman, 34.

SSP Raza told Dawn that police constable Aminul Haq and slain policeman Abdul Rehman were patrolling on a motorbike in Block-5 of Clifton when they signalled a car, whose occupants as per their statement, were trying to kidnap a girl.

The police intercepted the car driver and were trying to take him to the police station when the incident occurred.

“The driver pulled out a pistol and it started heated arguments, resulting in an armed stand-off between the two. Towards the end of this stand-off, the driver refused to go to the police station and fired at the policeman, who died on the spot,” the SSP said, adding that the policeman also returned fire, but the suspect remained unhurt and escaped in his car.

The suspect, Khurram Nisar, lived in Sweden and came to Pakistan on Nov 5, and stayed in his DHA residence from where the police recovered the car and weapon.

According to FIR, the policemen heard cries of a woman from a passing car on Khayaban-i-Shamsheer near 26th Street signal, at around 11.30pm. Constable Rehman chased the car and got it stopped near the Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s shrine, where he rushed and sat on the front seat of the car. But, the woman got off the car and disappeared.

The driver drove to E-street, Phase-V Extension and stopped in front of a builder’s office, where he and Rehman exchanged hot words. The suspect fired at Rehman and the bullet hit him in the head.
