KARACHI: Eight students were injured in a clash between two groups of students at the Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) on Saturday, police and hospital officials said.

South DIG Syed Asad Raza said that eight students were hurt when members of the Peoples Students Federation (PSF) and the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) clashed on the campus.

He said police and Rangers rushed to the spot and detained two suspects. He said that cases of hooliganism in the JSMU had been registered in the past and suspects were taken to task.

Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed confirmed that eight students were brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.

The DIG said that the police had registered an FIR under Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 324 (attempted murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of one of the students.

He said efforts were underway to arrest nominated suspects.

Complainant Mohammed Suleman stated in the FIR that he was a student of the Institute of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation at the JSMU. He along with his several friends was present at a “Food Court” when three suspects — Abdul Razzaq, Arif and Javed — along with 25-30 other unidentified persons arrived there at around 1pm. They were armed with sticks, iron rods, etc, while three of them had pistols, he said.

The complainant said that he and his friends ran and the suspects chased them and started beating them with sticks and iron rods. He said that he and his friends suffered injuries to different parts of their bodies caused by sticks and iron rods. In the meantime, the police and Rangers arrived who detained two suspects.
