Wherever you are, whatever you do, books remain close companions to most of us. And for an avid reader, a book is incomplete without a bookmark. Yes, bookmarks, whether in simpler or in trendier form, are a favourite of all booklovers, of every generation.

For those of you preferring to bring out their creativity in the little things around them, they can make their own handmade bookmarks. Whether reading a few pages before bed or ticking off any academic book, try this new bookmark DIY and customise it in any way you like.

I have made a kitty with her forepaws popped outwards, which will hold on to the page of the book you want to mark. You can draw a rabbit, a dog, a cow, or any other animal with little tweaks in ears and head shape.

Things you need

  1. White paper

  2. Pencil

  3. Colour markers, colour pencils

  4. Scissors or paper cutter

  5. Glue stick

Directions:

  1. Draw a cat on a white paper, ideally the length should be 3.5 inches from head to paws, see picture 2.

  2. Using a black marker, highlight the edges, eyes, whiskers, forepaws, nose and mouth, see picture 3.

  3. Use markers or colour pencils to colour the cat’s head, ears, forepaws, hind paws and sides, picture 4.

  4. Cut it out carefully, and also cut the edges of the forepaws, picture 5. To make it hard, paste the hardboard on its backside, picture 6.

  5. You can alternate black marker for eyes by pasting googly eyes, picture 7.

  6. The bookmarks are ready; you can create other animals in a similar way, picture 8.
