Nawaz Sharif's condition not satisfactory: doctors

Services Hospital Lahore Medical Superintendent Dr Saleem Shahzad Cheema has said that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's platelets have increased but not to the normal level.
Talking to the media on Saturday, Dr Cheema said that the former premier was not medically fit. He further said that the number of platelets in Nawaz's blood have not increased to a satisfactory level.
He added that Nawaz was made to walk today so doctors could know if he was able to travel or not.
Other doctors are of the opinion that the former prime minister is not in good condition so he remains in the hospital, he said, adding that Nawaz Sharif can make a request if he wants to leave the hospital.
Nawaz Sharif will be declared fit after his platelets count increases to more than 150,000, the MS said.
Dr Cheema further said that Nawaz was being administered steroids to resolve kidney-related problems. He also said that Nawaz's blood sugar level has increased from 200 to 375.
Earlier in the day, Nawaz's family doctor, Dr Adnan Khan, took to Twitter to share updates on Nawaz's health. He said that the former premier's condition remains "critical".
"The treating doctors tried to reduce the steroids dose being given to him but unfortunately resulted in drop in platelet count again which has come down yesterday," he said.
"The cause needs to be diagnosed and established without delay."
The former premier had been shifted to the hospital from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore’s custody on October 21 after Dr Khan raised alarm.
Initially, Nawaz was reluctant to go to the hospital. However, he later agreed to be treated at the Services Hospital when his younger brother Shahbaz Sharif, who was especially called there, persuaded him.
On Tuesday, the Islamabad High Court had granted bail to Nawaz, suspending his seven-year sentence in the Al-Azizia corruption reference on medical grounds. Earlier, Nawaz had secured bail in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case from the Lahore High Court, also on medical grounds.

Get well soon. Best wishes and dua for Nawaz Sharif. But still he did all he can to destabilize the legitimate government of PM Imran Khan through Maulana Fazalur Rehman. He should have totally detached himself from politics with peace of mind. His dropped of platelets is directly concerned with mind boggling in politics and rivalry to PM Imran Khan. Creating instability in country is certainly no service.

This is all political and dirty politics. Why the family not transfer him to Shaukat Kannum hospital ?The pakistan one of the best hospital or Agha Khan hospital Karachi. Nawaz Sharif doctor is also playing politics via Twitter by issuing statement which clearly show intention that he wants him to go abroad. When Imran Khan fell down from stage in 2013 in Jalsa, He was treated by same Pakistani doctors in Shaukat Kannum hospital and he recovers fully as well

No it is not satisfactory. If someone becomes ill that is not the fault of the government either. He probably would have had this condition even if he had not gone to prison. He has been given better medical care than most people, with physicians monitoring him night and day. The rich just do nor want to die and lose their money and comforts. Did Nawaz expect his money to allow him to live forever?

Low platelets in ITP is chronic issue ( chronic means long term). It is not a disease acquired by being in jail or poor environment. Treatment options in Pakistan ( places like Shaukat khannum and AKU) are no different than what is offered outside of Pakistan. Really not a need to leave country, although I think that is what this may be about. I just do not trust these guys anymore.

From a professional point of view, I am not convinced Dr Adnan understans what the word "critical" in modern medical terms means. I can imagine if doctors are concerned about his medical condition, but critical is a term used when doctors are not sure if a patient is going to survive or more likely not survive.

As per medical terms, the definition of "critical condition" refers to "uncertain prognosis, abnormal vital signs, various complications, and death may be imminent". Dr Adnan ought to be queried if Mian Nawaz Sharif's current medical condition fits all these criteria for it to be defined "critical".

Steroids are NOT given to resolve kidney related problems as written in this report. These are one of medicines used in ITP to help increase the low Platelet counts. Unfortunately, steroids will worsen Diabetes which in turn leads to affects on kidney function or creatinine. medication refractory ITP patients are sometimes offered Laparoscopic Splenectomy to help increase platelet counts. 60-70% patents will respond to taking spleen out & get rid of the steroids & their side effects.

Iatrogenic is the most likely cause. Bone marrow hematopoietic stem cell stimulation is required. Immunosuppression is making matters complicated.

ITP is usually not a life threatening disease and does not even require hospitalization unless someone is actively bleeding. NS’s platelets should improve on steroids. No reason to travel abroad !

Dr Adnan has one point agenda, which is to get Nawaz Sharif out of the country. Yes, it may come to that, but he is using flawed medical arguments such as terms like "critical condition" to achieve his objective. From a medical practitioner's point of view, this goes against the ethics of this profession and the oath he must have taken once he had qualified.

Looks not only wildly unreasonable but grotesquely inhuman that the most celebrated politician amongst the country’s current pack, having been elected PM three times is not being provided the due and desired medical relief and left struggling the battle of life and death. By now there ought to have been expert Doctors from abroad in the country to monitor his blood platelets problem which are playing truant. So far he has withstood the onslaught of this physiological hari-Kari. But how long, the problem refuses to get stabilized. The onus is on Government because the patient is in their custody. Anything intowards will prove quite costly for the incumbent Dispensation.

N. S. Need to be tested for viral infection including Hep C Hep B and other viral infection if he had any Dental work or Blood Transfusion in the past 15 years. That's the most common cause for frequent platelets damage

Drop in platelet count once steroids are reduced is common in patients with ITP and steroids should be reduced gradually and slowly. Sometime patient needs steroids for a long time in addition to a steroid sparing drug. I am sure Pakistani doctors are fully capable of managing this condition in Pakistan and there should not e any reason to travel anywhere.

Nawaz's complete recovery is possible only if he is allowed to leave the country without payback of the amount which he allegedly misappropriated during the era he remained in public office.
It is surprising and astonishing as well that he is released after receiving a sentence by a court of competent jurisdiction under what law or morality.
Even if he is sick, he must be provided with the necessary treatment as a prisoner according to the jail manual.
Is there any rule of law? All such orders from Honourable Judges are in fact bringing disrepute to administration of justice.
