'So-called friends of Karachi' choked sewers to disrupt cleanliness drive, says CM Shah

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Sunday accused "so-called friends of Karachi" of trying to disrupt his ongoing 'Clean My Karachi' drive by choking sewer lines, a statement released by the chief minister's office said.
Shah made the remarks while he toured the city to inspect progress of the ongoing cleanliness campaign, that was initiated by the provincial government a day before and will last a month.
Shah said that the second day of the drive had started with the removal of heavy stones and boulders in order to unblock a 24 dia sewer line in the city's Malir 15 area and alleged that the lines were blocked on purpose in order to disrupt the cleaning drive. The chief minister added that the choked lines could have caused sewage water to spill over in Malir and Quaidabad areas as well as Shahrah-e-Faisal.
"These people are enemies of Karachi and Karachiites, therefore they are playing with them," Shah was quoted as saying by the press release.
He was accompanied on his tour by his cabinet members, including Sindh Information Minister Saeed Ghani, Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Shah, Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister on Information Murtaza Wahab and Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shahlwani among others.
The statement further said that about 7,152 tonnes of garbage had been lifted on the first day of the drive.
Over 600 dumper trucks, shovel machines and tractors and 4,000 workers will be be employed for the campaign that started yesterday.

Since Rangers have played an active role in maintaining peace and tranquility in the city, I suggest that the rangers may be involved in the supervision of cleanliness drive initiated by the Government of Sindh. If any such evidence is found, whereby the sewers and gutters lines were choked by adding heavy stones by the so-called Friends of Karachi, please expose them on media, so that the people of Karachi may witness and observe the acts of those unwise people, who played politics with the problems of Karachi. Meanwhile, since Mayor of Karachi has a stake in the city, and is solely responsible for such acts, it is better that he may be fully involved in this drive for cleaning the city of Karachi.

and chocking of lines was a obvious case as it only happens in Karachi specifically when MQM is in opposition ,Its not the first time. That is why like Lahore a private firm was involved so that atleast "Garbage" can be removed without involving any Garbage politics.

Cleaning the city of garbage will not resolve the recurring issue. What is to be done to avoid recurrence is the main issue. Awareness to the public must be made and garbage bins in big size must be made available for the public to throw garbage in it, otherwise, this exercise will be futile. Who is going to monitor each citizen littering around and finding them and imposing fine and penalty on them. The mayor has 16000 employees under him, similarly, chairman DMC Malir has 2400 chairman East has 3800, chairman DMC Korangi has 6000, chairman DMC west has 6700, chairman DMC Central has 10155, chairman DMC south 4556 employees under them, with a total budget of Rs 45 billion under them, yet they cry for money and no cleanliness. Is this not an irony ? Karachi people deserve what they are going through. They have elected them, so they all are complicit in this mess.

This is how it works in west. Each city is responsible for roads and civic services including police and they collect property taxes. Province is mainly responsible for highways and healthcare in addition to overall province policy. Federal govt is responsible for foreign policy, armed forces and overall country policies.

But this drive like the others in the past being a storm in the cup, are bound to fail because it lacks a well charted out plan to cater for 13000 tons of garbage including 1 ton of plastic & 100 tons of medical wastes produced daily. With 60% of this waste-strewn on streets which is finally swept into sewerage & drainage system clogging them for good.
The CM or whosoever undertake this gigantic job must accomplish, 1. Install scientific treatment system for medical wastes followed by incineration in 50 major hospitals of the city,2. Procure more equipment, truck & manpower to daily remove 13000 tons of garbage, 3. Create new waste transfer station and land fill sites, 4. Remove encroachments on 40 large drainage nallahs and their outfalls, 5. Educate people through mass awareness to segregate wastes at source, 6. Provide incentives for new waste recycling plants,7. Replace use of plastic bags with paper/cloth bags, 8. monitor cleaning of drainage system.
