Lord of the Rings TV series will be ‘most expensive ever’

The big-budget TV adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece is expected to become the ‘most expensive TV series ever’.

After reportedly forking out a whopping $250million to secure the rights, Amazon are expected to spend an eye-watering $1billion across five seasons. Production expenses, such as casting, producers and visual effects, will send the budget skyrocketing.

Amazon’s take on J.R.R. Tolkien’s work will be a prequel series set before the events of The Fellowship Of The Ring, the first novel in the trilogy. Director Peter Jackson’s three Lord of the Rings movies earned more than £2billion at the box office, taking 17 Oscars.

The all-star cast included Sir Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortensen and Liv Tyler, but it is not yet known if any of them will appear in the TV series.
