KARACHI: A heated exchange between Javed Miandad and Shahid Afridi appeared to be cooling down Tuesday after Miandad 'forgave' Afridi, but the former T20 skipper hit back saying he would challenge the cricket great's allegations in court if not withdrawn.
The tussle began when Miandad alleged that Afridi wanted to play a farewell match for money.
Rebuffing Miandad's claims, the former Pakistan T20 captain launched an attack on the former Test captain and said: "Money has always been an issue for Miandad."
Soon after Miandad told a TV channel on Tuesday that he would "forgive" Shahid Afridi, the flamboyant all-rounder took to Twitter, questioning whether the cricket great had "withdrawn his allegations".
"Javed Bhai has pardoned me? Thanks, But has he withdrawn his allegations, what has he got to say to that?" questioned the 36-year-old.
In a series of tweets, Afridi asked Miandad to withdraw his allegations or he would "have to seek answer and justice to clear my reputation in court".
Miandad earlier said, "Shahid Afridi's statement disheartened me but I pray for him... Being an elder, I forgive him."
Afridi, responding to Miandad's statement tweeted: "I want to stress that I have great respect for Javed Bhai he is our hero, our legend, he's my mentor too. I'll never lose regard for him."
He added, "Nothing matters more to me then playing for my country with pride, no one can accuse me of selling my country."
Wasim calls for 'mediation'
Fast-bowling legend Wasim Akram called for "appropriate mediation" in the war of words between the former skippers.
Akram on Twitter said it was "really sad" to see the altercation between the veteran cricketers, adding that the situation called for a quick resolution "instead of this unwanted chaos".
"Javed Bhai and Shahid mean a lot to me and to Pakistan," he wrote.

Afridi is a cricketer whom we can't easily forget. We remember his famous knocks which has brought many victories to Pakistan and simply we cannot sideline him. One time he was an asset to the Pakistan team,in Sri Lanka we still talk about his achievements.

@Sab Se Pehle Pakistan You could not have put it better. Afridi is way out of line. And also, I request everybody to please stop calling him "legend". He is no legend at all. Just look at his record. Javed Miandad, on the other hand, is a living legend of the game...and I am from Lahore!

In all honesty I think Miandad was at fault here and Afridi gave him a good response during the press conference. But going to court is a little far fetched.
I feel Miandad should also act more maturely, Afridi is in fact Afridi

Being older doesn't mean he is wiser. A tree can be 500 years old. Javed should have had his head above his shoulders. He doesn't have any rights to pardon anyone when he himself started the fight.

Miandad is one of the best players in crickey history in Pakistan . Afridi was no way near him as a player even though he became a super star in Pakistan. However, since Miandad has chosen to make very serious allegations about him, Afridi has every right to seek legal means to clear his name. One cannot make allegations about someone and pardon them too!!

Afridi is right. Firstly Miandad started this chaos and secondly made serious allegation of match fixing on the former. Miandad should clarify himself otherwise Afridi reserved the right to go to court.

There are more matches Pakistan LOST due to Afridi than won due to him. Secondly he is not a teenager that he do not know when his time is up and hang is gloves. It was way overdue. Remember Imran Khan retirement just after he won the only WORLD CUP for PAKISTAN.

I am big fan of Afridi. He might be carefree and has a style of his own. He deserves a farewell fitting to his stature. Miandad may be a greater legend but has no rights to sully Afridi. Afridi is within his rights if he takes legal recourse unless Miadad withdraws allegations.

Who cares about either of them, particularly the way Afridi treated Shoaib in the world cup 2011. Anyway, the real legend great Younis Khan, is waiting to reach 10,000 runs. My my, what a feat that will be. Scored most of his runs away from home grounds, the master of the fourth innings and usually coming in at 10 for 2 for most of his career.

Miandad, as great as you are and a living legend of Pakistan cricket you have a habit of stirring things up. One thing that you were never good at was human interaction and man management. As a legend you have some responsibilities too, you need to observe your status and have to learn how and what to say because it does matter since you being a role model and all. Now Afridi, you are nothing but a salesman for various products. You have repeatedly brought shame to Pakistan cricket, either you were taking a bite out of the ball, digging up the pitch with your cleats, slapping a Dr. on the field or smashing your fans at the airport! you have had your verbal skirmishes with Amer Sohail, Shoaib Akhter and now Javed Miandad. You were and always will be a selfish player who played not for your country but for your endorsements. Your few memorable sixes are not worth the career you were handed by the equally inept PCB. Grow up all of you!

Miandad started all this mess by making unnecessary provoking comments on afridi, and now lala responded with a sixer as usual. No cricketer past or present reserves the right to make match fixing allegations without any evidence especially for afridi who had served selflessly for his nation. Demanding farewell match is not a big deal and it does not mean you can malign afridi carrier. Same allegation can be made against Miandad. So give respect and take respect how big a legend u r.

@Mujtaba serving Abdul Razzak was a better all rounder compared to this guy. THis guy occupied place of a talented individual for more than 15 years. He was a average batsmen and a bowler, whenever his position was at stake he used to play one exuberant innings and again nothing for a couple of dozen games and than again used to play a good innings. People need to realise that by getting out early he was putting the entire team at pressure.

@Really! Woah hang on there a sec, Afridi was a diamond in world tournaments. Won the world t20 2009 and single handedly took his team to the semis of 2011 with a string of five wicket hauls. Lets not underplay his achievements please. To say he was not worth his place in the team etc is also wrong. Yes he didnt value his wicket, but thats another story. Also, Im pretty sure Miandad once turned down a selectors role because the pay wasnt enough. This was quite recent, so blowing his own trumpet seems a bit ridiculous.

I am not sure why Javed is being praised so much- no doubt he is a legend of the game but I feel he was the one who ignited the fire. As a senior cricketer we expect him to talk to Afridi in person instead of the media. Knowing Afridi's maturity level this was always going to be ugly.

I would blame Miandad for all this. First of all why did he give a statement that Afridi wanted the farewell game for money. This statement was below Miandad's stature. Secondly if he has accused Afridi of match fixing then he should come forward with proof or apologize. If he is unable to prove his allegations, then he should be penalized by PCB for blaming a Pakistan team player for match fixing.
