BEIJING: China and United States on Wednesday called on Pakistan and India to solve their differences over Kashmir, as tensions mount between the nuclear-armed neighbours after an attack killed 18 Indian soldiers in the disputed Himalayan region.

China “hopes that Pakistan and India will strengthen channels for dialogue, appropriately handle any differences, improve bilateral relations and together protect the region's peace and stability”, a deputy foreign minister told Pakistan's special envoys to China for Kashmir, according to the foreign ministry website.

The deputy minister, Liu Zhenmin, also told the envoys that China values Pakistan's position on Kashmir.

Know more: United States to urge India for holding talks with Pakistan over Kashmir issue

China has long been a strong diplomatic, military and economic supporter of Pakistan, and the two call each other “all-weather friends”. Their ties have been underpinned by wariness of their common neighbour, India, with which China fought a brief but bloody border war in 1962.

Tensions between India and Pakistan rose on Tuesday as India's leader cancelled a visit to a regional summit and Islamabad warned it would treat it as “an act of war” if India revoked a Indus Waters Treaty.

Kashmir: why talk to India?

US urges India, Pakistan to 'resolve differences peacefully'

In a press briefing by the White House, Press Secretary Josh Earnest urged India and Pakistan to “resolve the differences peacefully and through diplomacy”.

When asked about what does the US think of the current situation in the region, now that “India has pulled out from regional Saarc Summit in Islamabad later this year”, Earnest said:

“The United States has continued to encourage India and Pakistan to find a way to resolve their differences peacefully and through diplomacy. And we have condemned violence, particularly terrorist attacks.

“We continue to be hopeful and encouraging of both sides to try to find a way to resolve their differences and to reduce their tensions through diplomacy and without resorting to more violence.”

Know more: Cooling down Kashmir

In the wake of rising tensions at borders with India, China has already assured in unequivocal terms its support in case of any foreign aggression and also supported Pakistan’s stance on the Kashmir dispute.

“In case of any [foreign] aggression our country will extend its full support to Pakistan,” Consul General of China in Lahore Yu Boren was quoted as saying by Punjab Chief Minister Office earlier this month.

They have rest all speculations as its a bilateral issue and required to be resolved bilaterally without third party intervention

ART KP Sep 28, 2016 06:36pm

India is and never have been honest in solving differences with Pakistan! Killing Kashmiris then crying out loud at world stages to blackmail Pakistan to get sympathy.

Sahiba Sep 28, 2016 06:37pm

I as a world citizen urge china to obey the international court order on south china sea

neutral Sep 28, 2016 06:40pm

So, China and America wants to be neutral when it comes to India-Pakistan disputes namely Kashmir and others. China and America wants India and Pakistan to resolve its disputes bilaterally through dialogue in an environment free of terror.

ART KP Sep 28, 2016 06:42pm

@Sahiba sounds like you're only an Indian citizen.

talkative Sep 28, 2016 06:44pm

If kahmir is integral part of india why it is still closed after day 80 ? if people of kashmir are proud indians how come curfew still imposed by indian occupation forces in the valley?

There is no shutter down or curfew in any part of baluchistan its reality check for india kashmir is a disputed territory not part of INDIA 600000 presence in the valley only securing land not hearts and minds of people of kashmir. Be ware no army can defend any piece of land if their residents are against them. Answer to Madam Swaraj :)

neutral Sep 28, 2016 06:43pm

Mature move, good that America and China are neutral in India Pakistan disputes, which reduces tension in the region.

DV Sep 28, 2016 06:48pm

@neutral, it is about credibility, whole world knows India's credibility. Otherwise, it would be a different story.

hani Sep 28, 2016 06:51pm

A sane voice,,, this is a True Regional Triangle in which two parties have strain ties and then a third one comes to befriend them... that's beauty of meddling

Agha Ata Sep 28, 2016 06:53pm

It is so nice and gracious of China to help Pakistan. But helping to have a dialogue is not the answer. The answer lies in changing the attitudes.

prakash Sep 28, 2016 06:59pm

first china solve south china sea then advice others

indian muslim Sep 28, 2016 07:05pm

I hope that Modi ji and its advisor have well thought about what if China could respond to this act by blocking River Indus and River Brahmaputra as both of them originate from there. This step would led India Violating an international treaty backed by the World Bank and India would invite condemnation from across globe putting as India is already under immense pressure amid of Kashmir's violence. The speech by Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations General assembly was a already a slap for Sushma Swaraj's speech and the response is weak as of what is expected from India

Harisingh Sep 28, 2016 07:06pm

China made USD 48.8 billion from India between April 2015 - January 2016. It is not about jeopardize that anytime soon. China will continue to engage both parties and give lip service at the same time.

The issue has to be resolved by the two countries without any threat of terrorism.

naveed iqbal Sep 28, 2016 07:12pm

@Sahiba are you performing all your tasks well. I expect you have lot of pending and fix it first.

Vijay Sep 28, 2016 07:14pm

Translation; Hey India and Pakistan it's your problem so you solve it don't bother us. US, Britain and Germany are saying the same thing.

Indian Sep 28, 2016 07:16pm

Jammu and kashmir is the integral part of india.

irfan Sep 28, 2016 07:17pm

@Sahiba You just validated the Real International Agenda behind this all politics. Real Concern is South China sea. China growing Power and CPEC will further strengthen China power have become a nightmare for India and USA.

We respect Indian Concern and we will take them serious once CPEC is completed and Gawadar port is established. China and Pakistan have announced Joint Naval force for Gawadar and full inauguration will be done very soon .

TruePakistani Sep 28, 2016 07:20pm

@Sahiba , Yes you are right. China had to obey international order

status quo Sep 28, 2016 07:19pm

US is neutral on Kashmir UK is neutral on Kashmir China is neutral on Kashmir UN is neutral on Kashmir At least now accept status quo on Kashmir.

Srikanth Sep 28, 2016 07:20pm

China won't speak anything that hurts indian sentiment because it has huge business interest in india , for China their benefits will come first before anything else

farooq shaikh Sep 28, 2016 07:26pm

@prakash Living in fools paradise? what you have to do with south china sea. Look at home and solve immediate disputes directly concerning people.

Jam Sep 28, 2016 07:31pm

@neutral China's statement was neutral. USA's statement was not neutral. Speaking of both countries in the same breath they should not have mentioned that they condemn terrorist acts because that is a reference to Uri attack and implies that one of the two countries is involved.

Amar Sep 28, 2016 07:33pm

@farooq shaikh It has to do with the morality of China in asking some other country to resolve issues while itself blatantly violating all international laws. The core issue is stopping terrorism coming from Pakistan. You stop it & the very next moment you will find India more than willing to engage in talks.

khalid Sep 28, 2016 07:33pm

The Great Leaders of Pakistan and India never want to solve this, otherwise nothing will be left for the two POOR nations to think about their differences. Actually the Kashmir issue will keep both the poor nations busy and involved luckily both countries leaders are corrupt cruel and clever in negative sense.

Sahiba Sep 28, 2016 07:34pm

@naveed, why are you comparing a country tasks to an individual's? Doesn't make any sense really. Decades will be lost for the fight of kashmir if that's what you want. India is a giant country just close to china.

solution Sep 28, 2016 07:36pm

Only solution to India-Pakistan disputes is terror free bilateral dialogue.

ART KP Sep 28, 2016 07:41pm

@Sahiba Confirmed and verified Indian. Pakistan is not fighting in Kashmir, Only Kashmiris are fighting illegal Indian occupational forces.

Talha Sep 28, 2016 07:48pm

@aryan If the issues are to be resolved bilaterally then why is India asking other countries to boycott SAARC. Why does Modi want to isolate Pakistan then? Can't India manage Pakistan on its own "bilaterally"? It won't become bilateral when India wants it and international when India wants it. India can't bully Pakistan through its typical double standards.

tkh Sep 28, 2016 07:46pm

This should be an eye opener for all: Chinese cooperation is actually a strategic compulsion for China, not friendship with Pakistan. If China is losing a dime, it will never cooperate with Pakistan in any way. Please make your strategies based on your own strength and weaknesses, leaving any third factor aside. A Pakistani

hypocrsiy Sep 28, 2016 07:53pm

india running away from talks.they just believe in online propaganda and misguiding indian people regarding real issue.india is occupying force in kashmir which makes india run away from talks.they know only one line "pakistanis haven't read UN resolutions".in reality indians should read UN resolution in full form.pakistan has provided simple solution "ask kashmiris" in free and fair environment.pakistan will remove its forces and india will remove its forces from jammu and kashmir.the ball is in india court now.

Tanvir Sep 28, 2016 08:04pm

@Sahiba at the same time urge India to obey UN Security Council resolutions on Kashmir?

Hyderabadi Sep 28, 2016 08:06pm

@indian muslim China cant do that. Brahmaputra flows though Bhutan and Bangladesh for most part.

bilateral issue Sep 28, 2016 08:06pm

@neutral Our prime minster has always been saying Kashmir is a "Bilateral issue" and "Terror and Talks cannot go together".

Waqas Sep 28, 2016 08:06pm

China wants Pakistan to make LOC permanent so that CPEC can pass through non disputed territory. Indian might be happy to accept this as well.

u s upadhyay Sep 28, 2016 08:09pm

Firstly china shd solve its problem in south china sea

Smart Solution Sep 28, 2016 08:13pm

Talk for 'peaceful talks' has been urged for past 70 years, but no results. Why Kashmir issue is not taken up by United Nations Security Council to discuss it urgently and resolve this dispute between two nuclear nations?

lafanga Sep 28, 2016 08:14pm

@aryan "They have rest all speculations as its a bilateral issue and required to be resolved bilaterally without third party intervention"

Now it's an international issue. Thanks to Modi and all the false jingoism from Indian govt and the willing media. You wanted people to take notice because you wanted to boycott SAARC. Well the big boys (China and US) have taken notice and are telling you (India) to resolve the matter peacefully. What are you going to do about it?

Zok Sep 28, 2016 08:17pm

@khalid ; Psst! Have you been to India and seen the progress in education, health, education, social welfare, Judiciary and world trade and technology?

Smart Solution Sep 28, 2016 08:19pm

@indian muslim Excellent response. If India blocks river water for Pakistan, this should justify China diverting the river water going to India. May be Indians do not think in long terms, thats why they keep killing Kashmiris, hoping that Kashmiris and Pakistanis would give up this just struggle for Kashmiri freedom fighters.

Baaligh Sep 28, 2016 08:19pm

Both the US and China can easily arrange for issuance of an order from the UN / UNSC asking India to hold a referendum seeking Kashmiris views in accordance with the UN resolutions which remain unimplemented since many...many years but the UN and/or big powers have not done any thing and have chosen to remain silent. Instead of "urging" Pakistan and India to resolve differences the best thing to do is for them to press India to abide the resolutions and hold the referendum thus ending the status quo which is neither in the interest of any of the two countries nor for the global peace.

Vimal Sep 28, 2016 08:19pm

@Think deep think deeper

Shah Sep 28, 2016 08:20pm

World powers should come forward to solve Kashmir issue. Its no more India and Pakistan problem.

John Sep 28, 2016 08:24pm

@Zok ... I have been to India and seen progress for only top 10%. If there is progress farmers wont commit suicides in thousands.

gp65 Sep 28, 2016 08:23pm

@lafanga " Well the big boys (China and US) have taken notice and are telling you (India) to resolve the matter peacefully. What are you going to do about it?"

India needs to do nothing. Status quo suits India just fine.

Shamshuddin Sep 28, 2016 08:25pm

@Tanvir have you ever read any part of UN security papers. In that it's says Pakistan must withdraw their army. Can you di that first.

Prateik Sep 28, 2016 08:30pm

Terror and talks cannot go together.

M.Jamal Sep 28, 2016 08:32pm

Kashmir is now closed for more than 80 days due to Indian's high handedness.India kill unarmed people on daily basis and say nothing is wrong. It can't be solved bilaterally but by independent arbitration.

Ali Sep 28, 2016 08:35pm

India and Pakistan don't have leaders who have the vision and courage to resolve disputes peacefully. India and Pakistan defied and shocked the world by acquiring nuclear-weapons. They can't be trusted or expected to resolve the Kashmir dispute peacefully, therefore the United Nations must intervene.

UN Security Council Kashmir Resolutions must be implemented. Kashmir has become a nuclear flashpoint, the world can't sit on the sidelines hoping for peace, when a nuclear conflagration could destroy both the countries killing tens of millions of people.

Indian 1 Sep 28, 2016 08:37pm

My humble submission to Govt of India ..please do not talk to any one on Kashmir ...

Basit Ali Sep 28, 2016 08:41pm

@Shah They have already asked everyone to respect the LOC and move on, but no one listens. Is there any better or practical solution or do we go on bleeding people and economy

Ken King Sep 28, 2016 08:45pm

@Baaligh The 1st point in resolution is for Pakistan to vacate the whole of Kashmir. Until the 1st point is done 2nd point cannot be done

SB Sep 28, 2016 08:51pm

@Waqas , You may not be wrong

conspiracy_theory Sep 28, 2016 08:49pm

India will take care of Kashmir. Pakistan can take care of its own.

Sohail Khan Gem Sep 28, 2016 08:52pm

India is not serious to resolved the issue. Anyways they'll regret later on.

indian muslim Sep 28, 2016 08:55pm

Modi need to work on the inner state disputes first in regards to water allocation before thinking about Pak or any other neighbors. India's tech hub Bangalore was put into lock down after two people were killed and nearly 100 vehicles were torched in an eruption of violence in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. At issue was how to allocate the waters of the Cauvery, a river that rises in Karnataka and flows into the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.

China has far huger business interests in USA and yet they did not compromise on any issue like South China Sea, Korea, Syria or Iran.

Aftab Sep 28, 2016 10:19pm

China should first honour International court order and resolve this issue with its 6 neighbors first before giving advice to anyone. Pakistan must take a principle stand against China in the south China sea. We had enough from US in past and now following China will bring us more misery.

@tkh You have no idea what type of relation Pak and China has. China knows that they are the major player and future super power. They know what and how to say.

Did not China say that it supported Pakistan on Kashmir and that there MUST be a plebiscite??? :)

Thomas Sep 28, 2016 10:39pm

If, Pakistan had a good political and economic relationship with India, it would have become a prosperous nation by now. Good relationship with India means less military expense for Pakisthan. Unfortunately, Pakistan spends millions of dollars for arms and military equipments which otherwise could have utilized for the social development of this country. It is better to be late than never to kick start the peace process and friendship with India. That will be the beginning of a Pakisthan's true rising as a star in this region.

In fact, as long as the dominant world powers don't use their muscles and military threat, India will keep on imposing its hegemonic, expansionist, unilateral and egocentric policies and practices on all of its neighbors in general and whole of South Asia in particular.

If nukes are used by both countries it will be self destruction and the conflict obviously could spread beyond the region. Nukes or any WMD are not effective deterrent anymore; it is an object/subject of fantasy dream. It is also a subject for debate in the Press and on the TV to show-off their literacy and eloquence. They have no idea of the common man struggling to find the means for his basic daily needs.

AHA Sep 29, 2016 04:43am

Ayub Sep 29, 2016 05:11am

Kashmir no longer is an international issue. It is an issue between India and Pakistan. So, all the big power are advising Both India and Pakistan to resolve the issue bilaterally through peaceful means.

Rocky Sep 29, 2016 05:26am

There are a number of nations who have historical border disputes. China-India, China-Japan, China-Taiwan, US-Canada, US-Mexico. However, in order to solve those disputes, neither they point fingers at one another nor they take others problems to UN. They all put these issues on the back burner and they move forward in trade, business, culture, to make lives of their people better. So Pakistan should do the same. Focus on education, electricity, transport.

Mukesh Gupta Sep 29, 2016 05:58am

@ART KP so what, Sahiba raised the right question. Also both Pakistan and China have pathetic record in human rights and the is not far away when both will pay price for their misdeeds.

John Kerry should first call China and ask it to return to India that part of Kashmir ceded to it by Pakistan. Otherwise, he is wasting his time. America may have the money and time to fight a war on terror for 1000 years. It is still funding Pakistan for harboring Osama Bin Laden, and others. India does not ...

China for its part must cooperate with USA's request and not waste any time on that

Javelin Sep 29, 2016 09:01am

@Smart Solution ... Tibet was usurped by China and its legitimate government fled to India with the Dalai Lama.India's Nehru did not contest that at that time. India had a weak army and the Chinks took full advantage of it. Infact the legitimate Tibetan government is operating in Dharamsala India. Times are lot different now. India may derecognise the arbitrary usurping of a peaceful country (Tibet) by China. The world will support an independant Tibet. We are living in exciting times!

Syed Chishti Sep 29, 2016 09:04am

In recent days’Indian aggression&on-going atrocities in IHK is exceeding limits beyond human tolerance&for India to justify itself in front of comity of nations. Moreover, cease-fire violations are on the increase as well. This is where UN diplomacy is going to matter,"US, China urge Pakistan, India to solve differences over Kashmir."In presence of UNSC resolutions it is imperative for all UN P5 members to intervene&to bear responsibility of implementation of UNSC resolutions on the issue of IHK.The Indian atrocities&its bravado in threatening Pakistan with consequences for isolating Pakistan internationally is a provocation of great concern that can lead to an all-out war. Now UNSC should take-up this issue for implementing its UNSC resolutions at its forum so as to,“resolve the differences peacefully and through diplomacy,”between India&Pakistan. UN will not have any option to intervene if two nuclear states go to war. IOK issue is not going to be resolved without UNSC intervention.

CPEC is a real joke. CPEC is going to benefit China only much. I don't think Pak economy is going to benefit too much on that as it is being exaggerated. But can't Pak build their own roads..... I wonder,, why they need China for this.

Django Sep 29, 2016 09:12am

@zak ... Go read the UN resolution and conditions associated with it. Will Pak be ready to accept the condition first.

point of view Sep 29, 2016 09:39am

While Pakistan is busy in raising Kashmir issue on every possible international forum, India is taking measure to isolate Pakistan. Recent success is this regard is 4 members of the SAARC boycotted the meeting of the Heads of the State. India is taking measures to scrap Indus Water Treaty and status of Most Favorite Nation.

D.K. PAMNANI Sep 29, 2016 10:00am

China is neutral reg. Kashmir, What do you say now?

sam Sep 29, 2016 10:14am

Now atleast Pakistan should know that china will not go against india.

A.JABBAR Sep 29, 2016 10:22am

Please read Dawn article ( it clearly says Kashmir issue removed from UN. No more flexible or anything sort. Please work for good will of people of Kashmir on both side. That is what Pakistan should concentrate now.

Dr Deepak Sep 29, 2016 10:29am

@indian Muslim ..Pakistan is getting 80 % of of water of 3 Western rivers as a goodwill from India same as for MFN status for last 20 years ..both bound to be modified ..

Reality Sep 29, 2016 10:58am

Pakistan is equally responsible as India for the plight of kashmiris...admit it or not.. The arms insurgency couldn't be possible without pak support and Indian army has to deal it by any means...

Abdul Sep 29, 2016 11:42am

We need leader like Modi. Even though he has not dared to attack us directly, he has given us enough damage diplomatically. We are thinking all Islam majority countries will support us, at the same time Modi has been able to make relationship with our neighbors, Afgans & Iran with Chabahar Port deal. When we say Russia our new friend, they have not left India either. (India- Russia Joint Military Exercise going to held in Ussiriysk, Russia). None of the South Asian Countries is supporting us except China. We have already lost US to India. Modi has been able to make good ties with Japan, Israel & France. We can't completely rely on China. Modi has been at least partially been able to isolate us. India spends 5 times more on defence compared to Pakistan. We need to loose our pockets for strengthening our army.

shakil Sep 29, 2016 12:51pm

@Abdul That is inevitable. India is a big country with population of 1.25 billion and foreign exchange reserves of 430 billion dollars and rising, as against 22 billions of our own and unstable. Any country like India that has so great a business potential will certainly be preferred even by our own brothers or they wouldn't be in their right mind.. We have got to pull ourselves up economically to be counted with internationally, otherwise all our talking about our greatness and being let down by others would be a naïve approach.

Iqbal Malik Sep 29, 2016 02:52pm

@Sahiba Dumb who is talking here South China sea issue.

Iqbal Malik Sep 29, 2016 02:57pm

@prakash You are dumb, who is talking here China's issues. ........

Iftikhar Husain Sep 29, 2016 03:46pm

This is an outstanding problem of UNO and must be resolved by giving right of self determination to people of Kashmir as promised by UNO.

TimeToGoBack Sep 29, 2016 03:53pm

China is neutral, US is netural, Russia is neutral. In other words, they do not care what happens to India or Pakistan. Behaving like kids don't work in international politics.

Adnan 2 Sep 29, 2016 05:54pm

@BEST WISHES You are living in fool paradise. China already said they will support Pakistan fully. While US said they will be neutral.

Alba Oct 01, 2016 07:28am

@neutral ... China's relations with America are good overall. Chinese have been living and working in the United States since 1850. The Chinese people remember who saved them from the murdering Japanese army.

Alba Oct 01, 2016 07:40am

@Amar ... It is too late for that. The present Indian government wants nothing more to do with Pakistan. This is no longer the same situation.

Alba Oct 01, 2016 09:07am

@indian muslim .... You are absolutely correct.

Alba Oct 01, 2016 09:12am

@Ananth ... Malaysia and Indonesia have more Chinese citizens than the population Karachi.

Alba Oct 01, 2016 09:15am

@Chirag Patel ... What rock have you been living under? India and Pakistan can stop buying weapons. No one is doing any twisting to make your government buy weapons. The White Man and the Yellow Man are attacking the poor Brown Man. Get over yourself.

Alba Oct 01, 2016 09:41am

@Reader ...... So far as India and Pakistan are concerned the Kashmiris are not involved.

Alba Oct 01, 2016 09:45am

@Javelin ... Ooopps. The population of Tibet is now 38% Chinese people. When Buddha reached China Tibet was China. The Chinese people never saw Tibet as a separate nation.

Alba Oct 01, 2016 10:10am

@Mukesh Gupta ... Now Pakistan, China and India have a lousy human rights record. You people have just joined the other two.

Alba Oct 01, 2016 10:24am

@Iftikhar Husain .... Absolutely right. If India had a good relationship with Kashmiris and felt they could trust them that would be no problem,
