BAHAWALPUR, Sept 27: The Yazman tehsil council criticized the police, health, education and livestock departments’ apathy at its monthly meeting held on Friday.

Convened by Chaudhry Basharat Randhawa, the council passed resolutions against the “poor performance” of three of these departments.

Taking up the corruption accusations against Inspector Ghulam Muhammad of the Derawar police station, Cholistan, levelled by Qazi Shahnawaz, the house adopted a resolution through which it demanded an action against the official.

Mr Shahnawaz had alleged in his complaint that the citizens of Cholistan were being denied protection of rights by the inspector.

A Cholistan union council Naib Nazim, Khadim Husain, informed the house that the Derawar Fort basic health unit’s medical officer was not providing proper treatment to the rural population by staying away from duty most of the time.

He also claimed to have drawn attention of the district health officer, Bahawalpur, towards the apathy of the MO, saying the former did not bother to take action in this regard. “The people are deprived of medicines, not to speak of consultation and medical advice.”

The participants passed a unanimous resolution against the health department’s indifference.

Another resolution was passed against the local education department on the move of several tehsil council members. They alleged that shortage of teachers, and frequent absence from duty of those few available, in rural schools was spoiling the students’ career. The students, they said, were often seen roaming and wasting time.

The district education officer (male) assured the house that the attendance of the teachers would be ensured in the rural schools.

The council also pointed towards the care-free attitude of the livestock department field staff, which it alleged was not carrying on regular vaccination of the cattle in Cholistan. This was causing concern among the owners of the cattle, suffering from various diseases.

The house demanded that action against the relevant officials should be taken and vaccination campaign launched.

PHYSICAL REMAND: Yazman police on Saturday obtained a three-day physical remand of Shafiq and Asif, who were accused of attempting rape of minority girls, from the judicial magistrate.
