Shaan calls Shah Rukh's film an 'Ocean's 12' rip-off

Pakistani film actor Shaan has criticised Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming movie, Happy New Year, calling it a rip-off of famous American comedy-heist film Ocean’s 12, the Gulf News reported on Tuesday.

“Happy New Year is what — Oceans 12? Let’s be honest. They have to realise that they don’t have any scripts anymore, whatever scripts they have, it starts to become an art film,” said Shaan speaking to Gulf News.

The actor who recently starred in Operation 021 is currently in Abu Dhabi for the International Showbiz Expo, where he is expected to discuss the growth and prospects of the Pakistani film industry.

He also added that Pakistan and India should work together to produce superior films.

“We actors don’t have to win votes, so we don’t have to belittle each other. Actors can still be friends. We can still make good films and go beyond boundaries. That will only happen if major stakeholders like Shah Rukh or Aamir will shoot a film in Pakistan,” said Shaan, who plans to do a remake of Mahesh Bhatt’s much-admired film Arth.

Shaan has also been cast in two upcoming Pakistani films, Yalghaar and Gidh.

While in the UAE, the Pakistani actor is also expected to walk the Red Carpet at the opening night of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival on Thursday.

Shaan has pointed out correctly.Yesterday i watched a film Leon and then i realised that boby devol's film bichu was 100% copy of that. Its not Shahrukh only, amitabh, hrithik and many other bollywood super stars work in the films which are absolute copy of some hollywood film. Amitabh and hrithik,s famous film "Agni path " is copy of Scarface. Bollywood has copied many characters and theme of famous hollywood film "The God Father". There are many many examples where bollywood makes copy of hollywood films even many time use the same character and copy the facial expression and get ups also. Why we are not able to make films like bollywood ? there are too many reasons and if someone rationally think then he can find out the true reasons.

Our own South Indian Film industry which consists of 4 languages then we have Bengali, Oriya and Bhojpuri Film industry. All of these are singularly Much bigger then whole Pakistani Film Industry. May be Marathi film Industry which produces like 10 movies might similar to Pakistani film Industry. Why Bollywood will work with Pakistani Industry when these South Indian industry can produce marvelous Musicians and Stars like A. R. Rahman , Rajanikant, Maniratnam , Ram Gopal Verma , Deepaika Padukone.

However there are a number of good movies with nice stories and also artistic ones to cater to middle class taste. Particularly this trend has become more prominent since year 2000.

Question for Shaan: SRKs production "Red Chilli" has a budget 60 times (atleast) of the entire and combined budget of Pakistans production houses. He doesn't want to belittle anyone and goes ahead and does it. He believes that movies shouldn't be ripped off, and goes ahead and does just that. If he doesn't like Bollywood movies, he really shouldn't bother watching them. If he is jealous, those sour grapes are very much apparent. His movies will never find appeal else where not because they are Pakistani, but because they are really not well made. And it is quite rich to assume that this movie is a rip off even before it is released. Just because a heist movie was made in the west doesn't mean that all heist movies that follow are rip offs.

Plagiarism is now a news in India. The other day, while flipping through channels, I saw SRK really losing his temper in a show called Kapil comedy show. I was intrigued. stopped and went till the end, and it turned out to be a prank. It reminded me of an identical prank held a few days back in Faisal Qureshi's morning show on Eid.

He is right, Bollywood movies have no stories like kick, dhoom 3. Unrealistic actions, now Bollywood is a corporate cinema, a club of 100 200 crores. Watch srk's movies darr, ram jaane, kkhh, dwdljg, ausum movies. Now movies are kind of less storyline more business oriented, only attract a specific kind of audience. Good to see growing Pakistan cinema, O21 was fabulous movie.

Once the film industry moves out of the hands of a select few fair-skinned Punjabi/ Muslim families, quality will automatically improve...

The fact of the matter is Indian and Pakistani movies are nowhere near the Hollywood movies. India copies Hollywood and Pakistan copies Bollywood. I don't watch any of the Bang Bang, Dhoom Dhoom, Happy New year or the Operation 021. Hollywood is the most creative and until and unless these actors and their teams don't think on their own, people would call them victims of inferiority complex whether that person is Shan Shahid, Shahruk Khan or Amitabh Bachan.

I think the Title of the news item does not reflect what Shaan was trying to say. Anyways, its no secret that tens of Bollywood movies are copied from or are remakes of Hollywood movies. Some of the modern hits have been either copies or remakes of hollywood movies e.g. Ghajini (Momento), Munna Bhai MBBS (Patch Adams), Ek Ajnabi (Man on Fire), and many comedy movies. I don't think there is anything wrong with remaking or copying a movie as long as copyrights are not violated and remakes are well made and well adopted to local culture and audience.

This is strange, first this guy criticizes Bollywood movies, and then he wants Bollywood to cooperate with Pakistani film industry! Pakistanis have to understand that Indian film industry has no compelling reasons to cooperate with Pakistani industry. Actually, tomorrow if Pakistanis banned Indian films completely in their country, it will not make any difference to Bollywood. Afterall Pakistan is such a tiny market, that for Indian producers it is no more than spare change. Pakistan should now seek a new identity by cooperating with Arabs and Iranians, and should forget about India for good...
