PROVIDENCE: Darren and Dwayne Bravo provided the foundation for success as West Indies beat Pakistan by 37 runs on Tuesday to win the second one-day international in Guyana and tie the five-match series.

Darren Bravo proved the mainstay of a much improved batting performance for the home team with a top score of 54 with elder sibling Dwayne contributing a vital 43 not out to take West Indies to 232 for eight wickets from the opening 50 overs.

Pakistan were then tied down by an efficient bowling performance, ending well short of the target at the Providence Stadium.

Sunil Narine, who had not taken a wicket in West Indies' three previous one-day internationals, returned figures of 4-26 as Pakistan were bowled out for 195 in 47.5 overs.

Darren Bravo and wicketkeeper Johnson Charles put together a patient 79-run second wicket stand to steady the innings after talisman Chris Gayle has been caught behind in the first over, seeing off a threatened repeat of the 98 all out West Indies scored in the first ODI on Sunday.

Dwayne Bravo, captaining West Indies, partnered with the heavy hitting Kieron Pollard for a 70-run sixth wicket stand to pick up the scoring rate as Pakistan threatened to restrict the West Indies.

The tally over 200 was always going to be difficult for Pakistan to chase down as the early bounce on the wicket disappeared and it got markedly slower as the day wore on.

Pakistan, who did not hit a scoring shot off their first five overs, needed one of their big hitters to come off but saw wickets tumble regularly without any of their batsman able to settle at the crease.

Opener Nasir Jamshed offered four chances in his innings before departing on 54 and a 50 for Umar Akmal came too late to provoke a dramatic finish.

Shahid Afridi, the swashbuckling hero of Sunday's win, made just five runs and with his wicket the fate of the tourists was sealed.

The remaining three ODIs will be played at Gros Islet in St Lucia on Friday, Sunday and Wednesday next week.

Pakistan: Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shehzad, Mohammad Hafeez, Misbah-ul-Haq*, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal†, Shahid Afridi, Wahab Riaz, Saeed Ajmal, Asad Ali, Mohammad Irfan

West Indies: CH Gayle, J Charles†, DM Bravo, MN Samuels, LMP Simmons, DJ Bravo*, KA Pollard, DJG Sammy, KAJ Roach, SP Narine, JO Holder

Hafeez again? For how long???

Shrish Jul 17, 2013 03:22am

Pakistan's membership of ICC should be downgraded to that of an Associate member and Ireland should be made full member.

hassaan Jul 17, 2013 03:29am

afridi...what a mess...can't say I didn't see it coming

CricketEquipmentUSA Jul 17, 2013 05:09am

Pakistan needs a strong finisher like Razzaq, he has been sidelined and not getting picked in the Sqad. He deserves a place in the team, his absence in the team despite his strong performances in the past is a mystery.

Afif Naeem Jul 17, 2013 06:39am

Afridi back to his usual performance...

Vish Jul 17, 2013 09:13am

Alright! Afridi's normal service has resumed...

AK Jul 17, 2013 09:33am

Where is BOOM BOOM Afridi.....Im sure he'll going to flop entire series now.....

SAMI U LLAH Jul 17, 2013 10:06am

West indies won by 37 runs from Pakistan because they played very well

True to form, Shahid Afridi will be out in single figures for the next 10 games. Based on merit, Mohammad Hafeez must be dropped for good! Some of the younger players should be given opportunities to prove themselves.

Without dynamism, expect similar results because of the inertia that has set in.

Lalit Sharma Jul 17, 2013 11:08am

comment on afridi pls. For me he is a useless player average of 23 in 345 ODI.

raj Jul 17, 2013 11:42am

Captain is good for nothing,,,captain must b kicked out and a captain like Dhoni must b brought who stand by these kind of situation unlike Misbha always depends on Afridi Miracle Misbha doesnt know he also have to b a match winner being a captain and have a team work not a one man show AFRIDI performing everytime...

Fazza Jul 17, 2013 12:37pm

Make this Hafeez sit out for few matches he is become a pain for cricket lovers with his constant failures.

ABL Jul 17, 2013 12:59pm

Wrong article title. it should be "Pak batsmen help Windies win". There were 6 different WI bowlers getting top 6 Pak batsmen. This is simple and obvious lack of batting talent.. The Narine rout started later. Pak batting cannot even get 200. very frustrating!! Poor Moin Khan, he has to select from what is available.

pct Jul 17, 2013 01:41pm

our tem should get rid of hafeez and shafiq..and i did'nt get the criteria for which they playing at snail's pace..i had an idea of losing after that total above 200 because our batting has no ability to chase that total,,bowlers also did'nt show too many responsibility..i don't know what the hell junaid did'nt play 1st 2 games,,changes should be harris, umar and junaid in for hafeez, shafiq and asad.

Rogers Evans Jul 17, 2013 01:49pm

pakfan Jul 17, 2013 02:29pm

In this series Hafeez should be replaced by Umar Akmal or Umar Amin for one down position.

anwar khushab Jul 17, 2013 04:30pm

@hassaan: You are quite right. It was sheer madness, and it seemed that he was determined to get himself out. I think he got carried away by the (justifiable) accolades he received for his brilliant performance in the last game. Perhaps Waqar Younis was right in saying that Afridi was mentally immature.

johny blue Jul 17, 2013 04:48pm

@sami u llah......what is very well in west indies inning? they dropped 4-5catches and 3-5 run out chances. West Indies won because pakistan played very poorly specially extras in balling and shot selections in batting...

Naveed Jul 17, 2013 04:53pm

@Shrish: Not yet coz we recently thrashed world champ India so bad at their home grounds that we need a bit more time.

vijay kumar Jul 17, 2013 04:57pm

Pakistan may cry for Afridi and cry along with him.

But I think they should keep Razzaq and Younis Khan instead of Afridi. Misbah is a slow scorer and can never win matches.

Afridi has scored enough in the first match to last for the next ten matches where he could just fail as his batting is technically wrong.

Imtiaz Hydari Jul 17, 2013 05:08pm

problem with Pakistan losing to West Indies. After all one side has to win. It is the manner in which we lost that baffles me: Why would Misbah elect to field after winning the toss? Why are the Pakistani batsmen so afraid to play their natural game? Both Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shahzad were so occupied with not losing their wicket that they forgot how tokay their shots. The first few overs was a joke watching Jamshed in his crouching defensive stance and Ahmed Shahzad with hesitation written all over his face. Hafiz is not a number 3 at any level. If he cannot be pushed down the order then he must be sacked. Abdul Rehman will bowl just as well and probably score the 10 -15 run contribution of Hafiz Asad Shafiq is also not a limited over player. Umar Amin or Haris Sohail should replace him For heavens sake why is Umar Akmal the most natural and gifted batsman playing low down the order? Misbah shuffling in the crease trying to distract the bowler? It is so silly because he actually makes it difficult for himself Why is Junaid khan not playing? Wahhab Riaz is not someone who can score runs. His bowling is below par and he is expensive Shahid Afridi did take 2 wickets but for some one who only 2 days back so fluently, looked so rusty Finally the great bowling line up gave away too many extras- totally unacceptable. What is amazing is how easily we can sink into a low after such a high one match earlier

sherali Jul 17, 2013 06:17pm

If Afridi has to be included in the coming matches, it should be as a bowler. I think Asad should be replaced. Let Hafeez open with Nasir.

Mike Jul 17, 2013 07:14pm

Hafeez is pathetic. Can he be shown the door to exit pls!

AD Jul 17, 2013 08:01pm

@vijay kumar: Afridi wont score next 6 months. Afridi has played enough and we need to groom a young talent for the next world cup.

Arvind Jul 17, 2013 08:58pm

@hassaan: Guys dont blame only one player

Talha tariq Jul 17, 2013 09:03pm

Pakistan is very bad luck.

ZEM Jul 17, 2013 09:35pm

needs change in Pakistan team, bring umar akmal for 1down,haris sohial now for asad safiq, later on in place of misbah either asad safiq orYunus khan for preparing 2015WC.Junaid for wahab and also plsssssssssssssssssssssssss bring bk Razzaq ,he will vry much needed for 2015 WC

BN Anand Jul 17, 2013 09:50pm

Why so much disappointment with this loss which just levelled the 5 ODI series? After all it is a game where one has to win. I believe the postmortem should wait till series is over. Despite his very strong showing in the first ODI, Afridi has to be still watched. One has to take a balanced view of any player's extra performance. For example, in our case Bhuvnesh despite his good show is still on trial and no one has assured him a permanent place in the team. So please reserve your comments till the series is over. BNA

Raj Jul 17, 2013 09:56pm

Pakistani players have talent, they just need to come out of their shell and play their natural and smart game. Had Afridi played smart they could have won the match.

optimist Jul 17, 2013 10:50pm

For some reason the captain and coach cannot drop Hafeez and Wahab Riaz. Take my word they wuill drop Asad Shafiq and bring in Umar Amin and probably Junaid Khan for Asad Ali. The sensible thing would be to drop Hafeez, Wahab Riaz, Asad Shafiq and Asad Ali and bring in Umar Amin, Junaid Khan, Haris Sohail and A. Rahman.

optimist Jul 17, 2013 10:54pm

See Afridi bowling and batting average and runs scored per hundred ball. He is far above the rest of the lot, specially Hafeez whose average is only 27.00. I don't understand why they persisit with Hafeez and Wahab Riaz. captain and coach favorite or what?

khalid Jul 17, 2013 10:55pm

Wrong judgement from Pak Captain. Just hoping for some moisture, Misbah made the same mistake as WI did during first ODI, i.e. to field first. Such wickets becomes more difficult to bat in the second session. I was sure of this result as soon as Misbah made his choice. It was like a writing on the wall. Hopefully Misbah will learn from his mistakes, that will be a quality.

Samir Jul 17, 2013 11:10pm

@Naveed:just short series of 2-1 win doesnt make a genuine credibility of your flop team,,,,on any day of cricket you can even get defeat by minnow also...hahahah see your country figure of last 10 yrs with india,,we have thrashed you everywhere and in your home ground too..Test and ODI series victory and that too of convincingly...Poor man do some homework first before flowing in emotion,

A. majid Khan Jul 18, 2013 12:03am

Pakistani openers should be moderately agressive. Pakistan should not count on Shahid Afridi. He is uncertain.

Ali Jul 18, 2013 12:07am

coach and captain should either go or let the players play their natural game. Give them a long term inclusion assurance in the team and let them loose.

Chandramouli Jul 18, 2013 01:03am

The real problem is Pakistani selectors are thinking just like the people who are commenting here. One match win great player, next match sack him, get the other guy who has failed a million times before. I mean come on,

RAZA Jul 18, 2013 01:52am

@Shrish: What are the basis of your appreciative thoughts ? :D

RAZA Jul 18, 2013 01:55am

@Vish: Yes you are right. He has gone back to his normal strength, which is blowing.

RAZA Jul 18, 2013 02:05am

@Imtiaz Hydari: What is Asad Ali doing in the team. Average bowling, batting below the standards of a tail ender. Fielding is not extraordinary either.

RAZA Jul 18, 2013 02:07am

@sherali: I think hafeez should be kicked out of the team.

Sarah Jul 18, 2013 08:16am

I have mentioned previously that cannot use Hafeez as batsman.I think his batting position if he plays should be Number 11 as I am sure Irfan is going to score more than him .So best position for him to bat is Number 11.I would prefer Abdul Rehman though as bowler as he better bowler and quite useful in lower order hitting.Abdul Rehman had 60 odd test score against England as batsman.Shafiq is unsuitable for ODI.Use Harish Sohail and Umar Amin. Its time to bring changes before its too late.

karthik Jul 18, 2013 09:44am

blocking the ball is not a solution in west indies, playing accordingly if singles are not rotated we have to take risk amd playing natural game like afridi.

raj Jul 18, 2013 10:37am

@vijay kumar: Dude miracles happen every fort night if Tendulkar would have scored century in every match than he would have scored 600+ centuries so cool down.....Players like Sehwag and afridi will play and play on their own day and that day will wash out that 10 one days they didnt performed if they perform every day than there will be no International cricket and cricket will have no taste other 10players have to perform the 10 matches were afridi wont perform...HE IS A ONE MAN SHOW when he plays..

Youth Jul 18, 2013 10:37am

Technically Pakistan won the first match only due to Afridi's lucky performance. Minus his performance Pakistan lost. At least 3-4 batsmen should click in each mach only then can we rate the performance, with just one click each time is called a lucky win. Pakistan bating line simply melts.

raj Jul 18, 2013 10:39am

@Lalit Sharma: afridi is a balling all rounder he took vickets Lalit Modi

raj Jul 18, 2013 10:41am

@Afif Naeem: Pfif taeem Afridi took two wickets he is a balling allrounder and the best alrounder who made a record by scoring 70+ and taking 7wickets no one in the history will repeat he makes record which no one can break dude 36 balls 100 common dude clean your dirty senseless mind

Sanjeev Yadav Jul 18, 2013 12:58pm

@Afif Naeem: Usual???? once in a blue moon!!!

sachin Jul 18, 2013 01:01pm

@Naveed: Well, if you call a ODI win of 3-2 and a t20 draw 1-1 as a "so bad thrashing" then i really wonder what will you call the 3 Champions trophy losses of Pakistan ?? Do you remember when was the last time Pakistani batsmen scored 300+ in an innings ?

Sanjeev Yadav Jul 18, 2013 01:02pm

@Lalit Sharma: He is like a dragon who wakes once in a year. Pakistan should rather give opportunity to many more better Afridis who are playing in domestic circuit or even in a Lahore playground unnoticed.

Saad Jul 18, 2013 05:17pm

Pakistan is too inconsistent to actually win against any team. Unless they try to play decently every game and not rely on 1 or 2 "stars" to push them back up, they'll be the laughing stock of the cricketing wolrd
