Bravo brothers, Narine help Windies level series against Pakistan

PROVIDENCE: Darren and Dwayne Bravo provided the foundation for success as West Indies beat Pakistan by 37 runs on Tuesday to win the second one-day international in Guyana and tie the five-match series.

Darren Bravo proved the mainstay of a much improved batting performance for the home team with a top score of 54 with elder sibling Dwayne contributing a vital 43 not out to take West Indies to 232 for eight wickets from the opening 50 overs.

Pakistan were then tied down by an efficient bowling performance, ending well short of the target at the Providence Stadium.

Sunil Narine, who had not taken a wicket in West Indies' three previous one-day internationals, returned figures of 4-26 as Pakistan were bowled out for 195 in 47.5 overs.

Darren Bravo and wicketkeeper Johnson Charles put together a patient 79-run second wicket stand to steady the innings after talisman Chris Gayle has been caught behind in the first over, seeing off a threatened repeat of the 98 all out West Indies scored in the first ODI on Sunday.

Dwayne Bravo, captaining West Indies, partnered with the heavy hitting Kieron Pollard for a 70-run sixth wicket stand to pick up the scoring rate as Pakistan threatened to restrict the West Indies.

The tally over 200 was always going to be difficult for Pakistan to chase down as the early bounce on the wicket disappeared and it got markedly slower as the day wore on.

Pakistan, who did not hit a scoring shot off their first five overs, needed one of their big hitters to come off but saw wickets tumble regularly without any of their batsman able to settle at the crease.

Opener Nasir Jamshed offered four chances in his innings before departing on 54 and a 50 for Umar Akmal came too late to provoke a dramatic finish.

Shahid Afridi, the swashbuckling hero of Sunday's win, made just five runs and with his wicket the fate of the tourists was sealed.

The remaining three ODIs will be played at Gros Islet in St Lucia on Friday, Sunday and Wednesday next week.

Pakistan needs a strong finisher like Razzaq, he has been sidelined and not getting picked in the Sqad. He deserves a place in the team, his absence in the team despite his strong performances in the past is a mystery.

True to form, Shahid Afridi will be out in single figures for the next 10 games. Based on merit, Mohammad Hafeez must be dropped for good! Some of the younger players should be given opportunities to prove themselves. Without dynamism, expect similar results because of the inertia that has set in.

Captain is good for nothing,,,captain must b kicked out and a captain like Dhoni must b brought who stand by these kind of situation unlike Misbha always depends on Afridi Miracle Misbha doesnt know he also have to b a match winner being a captain and have a team work not a one man show AFRIDI performing everytime...

Wrong article title. it should be "Pak batsmen help Windies win". There were 6 different WI bowlers getting top 6 Pak batsmen. This is simple and obvious lack of batting talent.. The Narine rout started later. Pak batting cannot even get 200. very frustrating!! Poor Moin Khan, he has to select from what is available.

our tem should get rid of hafeez and shafiq..and i did'nt get the criteria for which they playing at snail's pace..i had an idea of losing after that total above 200 because our batting has no ability to chase that total,,bowlers also did'nt show too many responsibility..i don't know what the hell junaid did'nt play 1st 2 games,,changes should be harris,umar and junaid in for hafeez,shafiq and asad.

@hassaan: You are quite right. It was sheer madness, and it seemed that he was determined to get himself out. I think he got carried away by the (justifiable) accolades he received for his brilliant performance in the last game. Perhaps Waqar Younis was right in saying that Afridi was mentally immature.

Pakistan may cry for Afridi and cry along with him. But I think they should keep Razzaq and Younis Khan instead of Afridi. Misbah is a slow scorer and can never win matches. Afridi has scored enough in the first match to last for the next ten matches where he could just fail as his batting is technically wrong.

problem with Pakistan losing to West Indies. After all one side has to win. It is the manner in which we lost that baffles me: Why would Misbah elect to field after winning the toss? Why are the Pakistani batsmen so afraid to play their natural game? Both Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shahzad were so occupied with not losing their wicket that they forgot how tokay their shots. The first few overs was a joke watching Jamshed in his crouching defensive stance and Ahmed Shahzad with hesitation written all over his face. Hafiz is not a number 3 at any level. If he cannot be pushed down the order then he must be sacked. Abdul Rehman will bowl just as well and probably score the 10 -15 run contribution of Hafiz Asad Shafiq is also not a limited over player. Umar Amin or Haris Sohail should replace him For heavens sake why is Umar Akmal the most natural and gifted batsman playing low down the order? Misbah shuffling in the crease trying to distract the bowler? It is so silly because he actually makes it difficult for himself Why is Junaid khan not playing? Wahhab Riaz is not someone who can score runs. His bowling is below par and he is expensive Shahid Afridi did take 2 wickets but for some one who only 2 days back so fluently, looked so rusty Finally the great bowling line up gave away too many extras- totally unacceptable. What is amazing is how easily we can sink into a low after such a high one match earlier

Why so much disappointment with this loss which just levelled the 5 ODI series? After all it is a game where one has to win. I believe the postmortem should wait till series is over. Despite his very strong showing in the first ODI, Afridi has to be still watched. One has to take a balanced view of any player's extra performance. For example, in our case Bhuvnesh despite his good show is still on trial and no one has assured him a permanent place in the team. So please reserve your comments till the series is over. BNA

For some reason the captain and coach cannot drop Hafeez and Wahab Riaz. Take my word they wuill drop Asad Shafiq and bring in Umar Amin and probably Junaid Khan for Asad Ali. The sensible thing would be to drop Hafeez, Wahab Riaz, Asad Shafiq and Asad Ali and bring in Umar Amin, Junaid Khan, Haris Sohail and A. Rahman.

@hassaan: See Afridi bowling and batting average and runs scored per hundred ball. He is far above the rest of the lot, specially Hafeez whose average is only 27.00. I don't understand why they persisit with Hafeez and Wahab Riaz. captain and coach favorite or what?

Wrong judgement from Pak Captain. Just hoping for some moisture, Misbah made the same mistake as WI did during first ODI, i.e. to field first. Such wickets becomes more difficult to bat in the second session. I was sure of this result as soon as Misbah made his choice. It was like a writing on the wall. Hopefully Misbah will learn from his mistakes, that will be a quality.

I have mentioned previously that cannot use Hafeez as batsman.I think his batting position if he plays should be Number 11 as I am sure Irfan is going to score more than him .So best position for him to bat is Number 11.I would prefer Abdul Rehman though as bowler as he better bowler and quite useful in lower order hitting.Abdul Rehman had 60 odd test score against England as batsman.Shafiq is unsuitable for ODI.Use Harish Sohail and Umar Amin.Its time to bring changes before its too late.

@vijay kumar: Dude miracles happen every fort night if Tendulkar would have scored century in every match than he would have scored 600+ centuries so cool down.....Players like Sehwag and afridi will play and play on their own day and that day will wash out that 10 one days they didnt performed if they perform every day than there will be no International cricket and cricket will have no taste other 10players have to perform the 10 matches were afridi wont perform...HE IS A ONE MAN SHOW when he plays..

Technically Pakistan won the first match only due to Afridi's lucky performance. Minus his performance Pakistan lost. At least 3-4 batsmen should click in each mach only then can we rate the performance, with just one click each time is called a lucky win. Pakistan bating line simply melts.
