Four polio cases confirmed

ISLAMABAD: With the confirmation of four new polio cases, the total number of children hit by the virus in the country reached 295 on Friday.

Two cases were reported from Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and one each from Khyber Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Qila Abdullah district in Balochistan, said an official.

The outgoing year is shaping up to be the darkest year for the Pakistan polio programme, with a strong possibility that the number of confirmed cases may hit the 300 mark — which would be the highest number of cases reported in the country since 1998.

An official from the Ministry of National Health Services said recently that an `emergency operations centre’ had been established to oversee efforts to stem the spread of the polio virus.

The big share of responsibility needs to be transferred to parents showing lay back attitude. It was a successful experiment in western world. No school admission for children without immunization record. NADRA may intervene to facilitate putting restrictions on public services provided to ignorant parents. Nation and world community is spending so much resources which could be used on basic health and education The other side of the coin is, polio campaign officials don't seem committed to end this lucrative business where UN and other officials are deployed with heavy wages.

“It is a tragedy. Intensive education (formal and informal approaches) of the citizens of Pakistan can help prevent polio. People must stop listening to mullahs. This year, only 3 countries in the world have reported cases of polio (Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan). As long as a single child remains infected with poliovirus, children in all countries are at risk of contracting the disease. The poliovirus can easily be imported into a polio-free country and can spread rapidly amongst unimmunized populations. Failure to eradicate polio could result in thousands of new cases every year, within 10 years, all over the world. There is no cure for polio, it can only be prevented. Polio vaccine, given multiple times, can protect a child for life.
