LAHORE, Aug 23: Sargodha additional SP Nasir Muneef Qureshi, who allegedly shot at and killed a 23-year-old youth over a car parking issue on Eidul Fitr, was sent to the district jail concerned on Wednesday night.

Regional Police Officer Amjad Javed Saleemi told Dawn that the accused was sent to Sargodha district jail as the police didn’t feel the need of getting his physical remand because of availability of necessary evidence and witnesses’ accounts. He said the next step was the initiation of a court trial.

Inspector General of Police Mohammad Habibur Rehman, speaking to this reporter, said the Punjab government had suspended the SP from service and requested the Establishment Division to further proceed against him.

He said a charge-sheet was also being sent to the ED as soon as possible.

Tahir Mahmood lost his life after Nasir Muneef Qureshi, who was reportedly under the influence, opened indiscriminate fire on four youngsters.

“I will never pardon the police officer who killed my innocent son without any reason and will pursue the case till the court awards him capital punishment. He has destroyed my life as I was thinking of marrying my son whose mother had died during his birth,” grief-stricken father of Tahir said.

Ejaz Ahmad Cheema, who most of time kept sobbing during telephonic conversation with Dawn on Thursday, said he wanted to thank the IGP, the RPO and the DPO who identified the suspect and arrested him as earlier no body knew who had opened fire on his son and his friend Waleed Withra.

Cheema, who owns farmland in Sargodha district and has a daughter and three sons, including the deceased, said Nasir exchanged words with his son, pointed official weapon at his temple and acted as a hooligan.
