TANK/KHAR, Dec 27: Unknown assailants on Tuesday gunned down a member of Tank peace committee and left his two associates injured in Wazirabad area of Tank district while a pro-government elder escaped unhurt in a bomb attack in Damadola area of Bajaur Agency.

The peace committee member Nizamuddin was travelling along with his two associates in Wazirabad area when unknown attackers opened fire on him.

As a result, he received bullet injuries and died on way to hospital while his two injured associates were shifted to district headquarters hospital. So far seven key members of the peace committee, including its head Shahbuddin Khan, had been killed.

The committee was formed in 2009 before the launch of Operation 'Rahe Nejat' on the directives of the government to curb the growing activities of militants in the region. In 2011 it was disbanded after complaints from local people.

However, the government has failed to provide security to those people who had taken up arms against militants on the administration's directives.

BOMB ATTACK: A pro-government tribal elder of Mamond tribe and senior leader of peace committee escaped unhurt when a remote-controlled bomb exploded near his car in the Damadola area of Bajaur Agency on Tuesday.

According to an eyewitness, Malik Fazal Wahid, 42, was going in a car from his hometown Damadola to Khar, the agency headquarters. The car was badly damaged after being hit by a remote-controlled bomb. However, Mr Fazal remained unhurt.

The eye-witness said that Mr Fazal's car had passed the area moments before the bomb exploded. The local administration confirmed the incident.

A senior official told this correspondent that during a search operation the administration had arrested several suspects following the incident.

Relatives of Mr Fazal said that militants were responsible for the attack and added he had been receiving threats from the last few days.

Mr Fazal had recently formed a Lashkar against militants in the area. Mr Fazal's elder brother Malik Hamid Khan was killed in 2009 in an attack by militants.
