LAHORE, Dec 24: Muslim Town police arrested on Friday three traffic wardens for allegedly taking bribe from a driver, a source said.

The wardens arrested are: Muhammad Akram, Babar and Raheel. They were handed over to the Anti-Corruption Establishment for action.

The source said suspects were discharging their duty near Muslim Town Morr on Thursday when they intercepted an overloaded vehicle and demanded registration documents from driver Muhammad Imran.

Instead of ticketing the driver, the wardens agreed to let off Imran against a Rs5,000 bribe. Imran gave them Rs2,800 instantly and promised to give the remaining money on Friday and left the site.

The driver visited Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Ahmed Mobeen on Friday and informed him about the incident. The CTO asked the police to look into the allegations.

The Muslim Town police arrested the wardens red-handed taking from Imran the remaining Rs2,200.

This is the third incident of corruption in the traffic force reported in the city since their inception in 2007, the source claimed.

The earlier two cases were registered with the Lower Mall police station wherein a warden was booked for taking a Rs150 bribe and the other was charged for embezzling traffic license fees.

The CTO confirmed the incident saying that strict disciplinary action would be taken against the wardens involved.
