UMERKOT, Dec 13: A teacher broke left hand of his eight-year-old student at a private school in Kunri on Monday.

Basit Ali, 8, a student of class II, was hospitalised at taluka hospital after his teacher subjected him to sever corporal punishment.

Mir Mohammad, Basit's father, told journalists that his son was punished without any fault. He had approached EDO of education, secretary and complained to them against the teacher, he said.

Suhail Abro of SPARC said that despite clear directives by the secretary to the EDOs of education to avoid coercive methods in teaching and condemnation of corporal punishment by teachers, the outdated method was very much in use under the pretext of instilling discipline in students.

“Sometimes the beatings get so ruthless that they leave severe physical and mental scars on children's personalities,” he said.

According to figures gathered by the National Commission on Human Development, gross enrolment rate in schools is 70 per cent but almost 50 per cent children drop out before reaching the fifth class and only one third of 50 per cent manage to get through primary education.
