KARACHI, July 25: A vast area of Kalakot, especially the Gabol Road, has been inundated with sewage from gutter lines, making the road impassable for motorists and pedestrians, and creating unhygienic conditions.

This situation persists for the past many days, and presently there is a foul smell all around, and people are perturbed over the sewage pools in the locality.

The residents of the Shahanshahi Street are also affected owing to constant flow of sewage.

They said constant sewage overflow is a cause of concern not only for residents, but also for students and women also.

Students complained that sewage often spoils their clothes. The worst hit are the faithful who go to the area mosque to offer prayers and get their clothes spoiled.

The residents blame the authorities for not taking proper measures to maintain the drainage system fully operational as a result sewage overflow has become a permanent feature.

Naib Nazim of the UC, Kalakot, Mansoor Baloch, said the reasons for the failure of the system are manifold. But the major factors are lack of maintenance, misuse of open drains and constant breakdowns of pumping stations and shortage of sanitary workers.

Lyari Towns falls below the sea level and sewerage system is based on pumping stations and ejectors, constant power failures result in flooding of roads and streets.

The residents called for a permanent solution to the problem.

A survey shows that there are scores of points where sewerage overflows are always witnessed.

These are Karabai Karimji road, D.D Choudhry Road near Lea Market Exchange, Mir Mohammad Baloch Road, Lyari Zonal Office, Milk Market near Lea Market roundabout, Fida Husain Shaikha Road near Gul-i-Noor Grammar School, Chawkiwara Eidgah, Gabol Park Road near Bright Public School and Shah Bhittai Road near Baghdadi Police station.

Due to faulty sewerage lines, some areas have been receiving contaminated water for quite sometime and the KWSB officials have failed to rectify the fault responsible for supply of contaminated water to certain parts of Lyari Town, including Baghdadi area.
