FAISALABAD, April 24: The Mamukanjan union council officials have given a month's deadline to the district administration to ensure stoppage of disposal of polluted water in the open drain.
They threatened that they would launch a protest campaign in case of any leniency in this regard.
At a meeting of the union council, chaired by Nazim Chaudhry Babar Mahmood Noor, it was noted with concern that the district administration and the environment department had failed to stop the pollution caused by industrial units.
The meeting observed that due to seepage of chemical water, the underground water of Mamukanjan and its adjoining areas had become brackish. People had been developing hepatitis and asthma, but the authorities concerned were playing the role of silent spectators, they said.
The union council set a deadline of May 20 for the district government to stop the disposal of chemical water in the drain, otherwise the officials said they would block traffic and stage hunger strike camps.
Residents' data: District Police Officer (DPO) Amin Wains has claimed that a plan has been chalked out to computerize data on people, their living standard, family background, criminal history and location of sensitive areas at the union council level.
The DPO told newsmen here on Saturday that a special police squad consisting of two constables with a motorcycle and a wireless set would be deputed to keep liaison with each UC Nazim and the area SHO.
The squads would patrol in their respective areas, monitor the activities of suspects, collect the details of inhabitants, specially tenants, pinpoint the sensitive sites like worship places, banks, educational institutions, health centres, money-changers and business establishments, he added.
He claimed that the step had been taken to minimize the crime graph in the district. It would also bridge the gap between the masses and the law enforcement agencies.
He said closed circuit cameras would be installed at shopping centres and recreational sites of the D-Grounds and Satiana Road which would be monitored from Rescue-15 Centre of the People's Colony.
