HYDERABAD, Dec 19: The Jamaat-i-Islami held a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Sunday against the increase in prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene oil, inflation, exclusion of the religion column from the new passport and the president's uniform.

Speaking on the occasion, Hyderabad JI Amir Maulana Abdul Waheed Qureshi criticized the government for increasing the prices of petrol and added that this would also cause increase in prices of essential consumer goods like flour and edible oil.

He said the 13 billion dollars foreign exchange reserves were of no use when poor people were unable to make both ends meet and they were deprived of educational and health facilities. He said the national wealth was being squandered on luxuries and foreign tours and people were facing hunger.

He held the rulers responsible for the murder of 8,000 Muslims in Afghanistan. Mr Qureshi said these were the reasons that the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal had launched a countrywide movement against the rulers.

Shaikh Shaukat Ali said instead of strengthening personal rule, institutions should be strengthened for political and economic stability of the country. He said frequent increases in prices of essential items had made lives of people miserable. Rao Masood Ali Khan, Maulana Ghulam Mohammad Mirbahar, Abdul Qayoom Haider, Abdul Hameed Qureshi and others also spoke on the occasion.

They criticized a proposal to wind up veterinary hospitals in Hirabad, Hyderabad, Shahdadkot and Tando Mohammad Khan. They said they would continue their struggle till the acceptance of their demands.
