DADU, Aug 5: A large number of widows held a demonstration outside the local press club on Thursday to protest against the DCO for non-issuance of benevolence cheques.

They were led by Zainab, Hatan Solangi and Jannat Khatoon. Talking to journalists, they alleged that officials of the DCO office had misused the benevolence fund and added that cheques were issued to some widows only after receiving huge illegal gratification.

They said that they approached the DCO in this regard but he refused to resolve their problem. They appealed to President Gen Pervez Musharraf to direct Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Raheem to take action against the DCO and his staff and to ensure immediate release of their dues. When contacted, the DCO was not available to comment.

ROAD SCHEMES: Taluka Nazim Syed Zafar Ali Shah has said that Rs8 million has been allocated for the construction of drains and roads in the city and the work will soon start.

He was speaking to nazims, naib nazims, councillors and social workers at the taluka council hall here on Wednesday. He said that the work would be initiated within eight days after removal of 2,000 encroachments from Rai Bazaar, Shahi Bazaar, Station Road and other parts of the city.
