RAWALPINDI: 3 sentenced to death

RAWALPINDI, June 21: A court here on Monday sentenced three persons to death after finding them guilty in a murder case. The additional district and sessions judge, Mian Mohammad Shafi, also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 on each the convicts, Mohammad Tariq, Mohammad Amjad and Israr Ahmed.

In default of the payment of the fine amount the convicts would have to undergo another six-months of jail-term, the court observed in its verdict. The court also acquitted three co-accused, Gulfaraz, Waqar Ahmed and Riyasat, after the prosecution failed to prove them guilty in the same case.

The prosecution had contended before the court that those nominated in the case had killed Javid Akhtar over a family feud. Meanwhile, the additional district and sessions judge, Mohammad Akram Awan, acquitted Subaidar (retired) Wazir Ahmed in the murder case of his son and daughter-in-law after both the parties involved in the case reached an out-of-court agreement.

Similarly, the senior civil judge, Abdul Rehman Awan, adjourned hearing in the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi bench, onslaught case till June 26. The advisor to the prime minister on women development and special education, Nilofar Bakhtiar, and 21 Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) activists have been indicted in the case.

The court has already started recording statements of the prosecution witnesses. So far, two officials of the Airport Police Station have recorded their statements in the case.
