NAWABSHAH: Prisons planned

Published June 5, 2008

NAWABSHAH, June 4: Advi-ser to Sindh chief minister on prisons Gul Mohammad Jakh-rani has said that jail manual will be amended and two new jails will be constructed in the province.

Talking to newsmen during his visit to the district jail on Wednesday, Mr Jakhrani said that the new jails would be constructed in Naushahro Feroze and Ghotki districts.

The jails in the province had a total capacity of keeping 9,000 prisoners but there were more than 20,000 stuffed in them, he said.

He said that jail manual would be amended in light of recommendations of jail ministers of all the provinces, NGOs and other departments concerned. A seminar would also be organised to seek new ideas in this connection, he said.

He said that he had directed the jail administrations to behave in a humane way with prisoners, and warned that he would take action against those found guilty of maltreating the inmates.

Earlier, the advisor met prisoners, listened to their problems and issued directives on the spot for provision of legal help in their cases.

Later, talking to newsmen at the local press club, the adviser said that the Pakistan People’s Party had returned more powerful with the help of people.
