DADU, July 16: The Main Nara Valley drain has developed three breaches inundating 18 more villages and about 800 acres of cultivated land in Johi and Khairpur Nathan Shah talukas.

Two breaches, one 30-foot and the other 100-foot wide breach occurred in the drain on Monday near Johi taluka’s Mirzo Khan Jamali and Wani Jamali villages while a 30-foot wide breach occurred near Khairpur Nathan Shah taluka’s Murad Chandio village.

The floodwater was mounting pressure on the embankments of Johi but officials did not make any cut to reduce the pressure for fear of attacks from armed men present there.

Irrigation Secretary Shuja Ahmed Junejo said the level of water in Manchhar Lake was recorded within safe limits.

Meanwhile, army teams rescued 100 more displaced people in Khairpur Nathan Shah and Mehar talukas.

CHIEF MINISTER: Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim claimed at a press conference in Johi on Monday that floodwater no longer posed any threat to the area.

He said Rs15,000 each would be given to flood-affected families and the government would help in rebuilding houses damaged by floods.

About breaches in Nara Valley drain, the chief minister said it had been left unplugged to reduce pressure on the embankments.
