DADU: An auto-rickshaw driver was arrested for allegedly taking away personal belongings of a woman after she was killed when the tri-wheeler was hit by a truck in Jamshoro on late Saturday night.

The woman, Mehak Mallah, 21, a resident of the Syedabad locality of Jamshoro, was returning home by the rickshaw from the Sindh University Society area when the accident took place near the Institute of Sindhiology along the Indus Highway.

The woman died on the spot, but the drivers of the rickshaw and truck had already fled the area, according to the police.

“The police transported the woman’s body to the Hyderabad Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination. Her relatives reported to us that the victim’s purse and mobile phones are missing,” the police said, adding that a hunt for them was started.

SHO Zahid Jhatyal of the SU Society police station said that the rickshaw driver, Mr Ahmed, was eventually traced out and arrested. “The victim’s mobile phone and purse was recovered from his possession,” he claimed. He said that the truck driver was also traced out and arrested.

A controversy followed when the deceased woman’s relatives claimed that they found Mehak’s body without her heart and kidneys after it was handed over to them. “The organs were removed without our consent during the postmortem examination,” her parents, Najma Mallah and Ameer Ali Mallah, told the police and media personnel.

They said they returned the body to the hospital administration. They demanded a thorough investigation into the matter.

Amid a tense situation and protest by the woman’s relatives, additional police force was called out to restore order at the hospital.

Doctors and other staff at the mortuary were provided police escort to ensure their safety.
