ISLAMABAD: An under-custody suspect was injured after his accomplices allegedly opened fire on a police team with the intention to set him free.

Over the incident, a case has been registered at the Shahzad Town police station in response to a complaint lodged by an assistant sub-inspector.

The police said the suspect was arrested in connection with a case registered at the Shahzad Town police station on May 22 against six people for their alleged involvement in an attempted murder case.

The suspects had a dispute with Ashfaq Ahmed, and five days later they intercepted and allegedly shot and injured him. After his arrest, the suspect disclosed the location of a hideout where they had kept the pistol used to shot and injure Ahmed. A police team was then constituted for the recovery of the weapon.

The suspect was handcuffed and taken to the spot at Tamma Road from where the weapon was recovered, said the police.

Three persons riding a motorcycle appeared on the road when the police team along with the suspect was returning to the police station in a vehicle.

The motorcycle riders intercepted the police vehicle about a kilometre from the police station and opened fire on them. The officials took cover behind the vehicle and also resorted to aerial firing.

As a result of the motorcycle riders’ firing, the suspect in police custody sustained a bullet injury. The injured was shifted to hospital for medical assistance.

The police said the bike riders fired on the police with an intention to set free their accomplice.
