HYDERABAD: President of the Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industry (HCSTSI) Mohammad Saleem Memon has underscored the need for a comprehensive and sustainable waste management strategy to dispose of offal, bones, fat and other organic animal waste in an environment-friendly manner ahead of Eidul Azha.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr Memon said he had written to the general manager of operations at the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) regarding the matter. He noted that the large-scale slaughtering of sacrificial animals during the festival triggers an extraordinary surge in organic waste, severely compromising cleanliness, blocking drainage networks and causing foul odours and environmental pollution across both residential and commercial areas.
He stated that the chamber had submitted realistic, public-interest recommendations to the SSWMB last year as well, adding that the need for more modern and effective measures had become acute. He pointed out that complaints were already pouring in from various localities regarding the delayed collection of animal remains, which invariably leads to severe sanitation and environmental hazards.
The HCSTSI chief suggested segregating sacrificial waste from regular domestic garbage. To facilitate this, he urged the board to distribute biodegradable bags among citizens to ensure the streamlined, separate collection of bones and organic matter.
He also called for the deployment of dedicated collection teams to guarantee the swift transfer of animal waste, stressing that temporary collection points must be established at the union council level.
