LAHORE: Two minor physically-challenged brothers were killed after being hit by a train in Layyah district on Wednesday.

According to Rescue 1122, the victims were identified as four-year-old Azan and three-year-old Arsalan, sons of Sultan. Both the brothers were hit by the train near Jamman Shah on the Kot Addu Road in the Veghi Wala Bund area of Layyah.

Rescue teams reached the site after receiving information and recovered the bodies of both children from the railway track. Police also reached the scene and completed legal formalities before handing over the bodies to the bereaved family.

Layyah Rescue 1122 media coordinator Waseem Hayat said that the tragic incident plunged the area into mourning. A large number of people of the area gathered on the spot and protested against the administration for not installing barbed wire around the railway tracks.

Earlier this year, a teenage girl was killed after being hit by a train in Lahore’s Kahna area, while another boy died in a similar incident near Sara-i-Alamgir in Gujrat district last year.

Railway accidents and incidents involving pedestrians being hit by trains continue to be reported from different parts of Punjab and the country.

According to Pakistan Railways data, 537 railway accidents were recorded in the last five years, including 313 incidents involving deaths or serious injuries, with unsafe crossings cited among the major causes.
