GUJRAT: In a tragic incident on Wednesday, three-year-old twins drowned after falling into a pond near their house in Aroop area of Gujranwala.
Official sources say that taking notice of the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz ordered removal of Gujranwala Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) Managing Director (MD) Shabeer Hussain from the post.
Rescue 1122 officials say that minor twins — Muhammad and Muhammad Mustafa — were playing in the open area near their house when they fell into a seasonal pond.
On knowing about the incident, some locals retrieved the minors from the pond and immediately shifted them to hospital, where doctors declared them as dead. The parents of the twins came to know about the incident later, and they reached the hospital to receive the bodies.
Deputy director also suspended
Official sources say that initially Gujranwala deputy commissioner took notice of the incident and suspended Wasa deputy director Jaanzaib Chattha from service.
However, they say, the CM, on being informed of the tragic episode, sought a detailed report from the district administration, following which the Punjab government also removed the Gujranwala Wasa MD.
The minors were laid to rest in a local graveyard at Aroop after their funeral prayers were offered.
