KARACHI: Another case of rabies has been reported in the city after a 75-year-old resident of Lyari was brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) after developing symptoms of the deadly disease, officials said on Monday.
Doctors at the JPMC said the patient had been bitten by a stray dog around three months ago and is now exhibiting hydrophobia (fear of water) and photophobia (sensitivity to light), both hallmark signs of advanced rabies infection.
The patient has been placed under medical supervision and is receiving palliative care, they added.
Health authorities confirmed that this is the fifth rabies case reported in Sindh so far this year, amid a worrying rise in dog bite incidents across the province.
Three cases have been reported at the Indus Hospital and two at the JPMC, they added.
Medical experts once again urged the public to seek immediate medical care after any animal bite.
According to experts, rabies deaths are preventable with prompt post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) by stopping the virus from reaching the central nervous system. PEP consists of thorough wound washing, administration of a course of human rabies vaccine and, when indicated, rabies immunoglobulins (RIG).
If a person is bitten or scratched by a potentially rabid animal, they should immediately and always seek PEP treatment.
