SWABI, April 18: United Nations Development Programme’s country director Dr Anne Cockroft said on Tuesday that the CIET, an American non-governmental organisation, would provide technical and financial assistance to the district government to help it achieve self-sufficiency.

Addressing a joint meeting of CIET and the district government, Ms Cockroft said that till 2010 the district government would become financially strong and might not need assistance.

She said the CIET had been working in some districts of the NWFP, including Swabi. She said the programme was aimed at collecting information about education, health and other social issues. She said the NGO wanted to give relief to people in these sectors.

She said the government resources should be utilised in the best interest of people.

Ms Cockroft said the CIET had also been working in Sialkot, Khairpur, Khanewal, Lasbela and Haripur districts.

The Swabi district government representatives said the representation of women in the local government and assemblies had boosted their position. They said women had also been inducted into monitoring committees.

Women councillors, they said, got equal share in development funds and they had done excellent work in their areas.
