BOOM FOR LOOMS

BOOM FOR LOOMS: The recent crisis in Bangladesh has adversely affected its rising textile industry. The prevailing uncertainty has impeded the production and exports of Bangladesh. The situation, if handled timely, boldly and intelligently by Pakistani policymakers, can be favourably turned into an opportunity for the country. It is time our policymakers rose to the occasion, conducted an immediate review of the opportunity, granted some concessions, like reduction in power tariff, uninterrupted power supply, and provided other incentives to the textile industry to give a boost to our idle looms.

TREE MAINTENANCE: The recurring power outages in the Upper Mall Scheme in Lahore, primarily caused by falling tree branches onto transmission lines, are frustrating. These incidents have become increasingly frequent, leading to signifi-cant disruptions in the daily lives of the people. Recently, two electricity poles were completely burnt down due to a short circuit caused by falling branches. It is disheartening to endure such hardships while paying exorbitant electricity bills.

EDUCATION GOALS: The Constitution guarantees free education for all children aged 5-16, but over 50 years after the Constitution was adopted, we are still far from being able to provide universal education. Millions of children are out of school, and many more are struggling in underfunded and understaffed educational institutions. We must scrutinise the ailing education system, identify the roadblocks, and demand solutions. It is time for action, not excuses.

FLASH FLOODS: The recent flash floods have wreaked havoc in Awaran, leaving hundreds of people homeless and many others dead. Besides, crops have been destroyed by catastrophic floods. The relevant authorities should look into this matter, and provide shelter to the victims.
