KARACHI: Two suspects, including a wanted gangster, were shot dead in as many alleged encounters in the city on Monday.
Keamari SSP Faizan Ali told a press conference that acting on a tip-off, the hideout of the Kashif Dada gang was raided by a police team on the night between Sunday and Monday in the Old Golimar area.
As the suspects saw the police, they opened fire and in an ensuing exchange of gunfire one suspect, identified as Umair alias Jheengu, a notorious shooter of the gang, was gunned down while his accomplice managed to escape taking advantage of darkness, the SSP said.
He said the suspect had established a reign of terror in Pak Colony and adjoining areas of Old Golimar due to his criminal activities.
He said that he was involved in murders, attempted murders, extortion, narcotics and other crimes. There were five cases registered against him pertaining to murders and attempted murders.
In another raid, four suspects — Nabi Bux alias Baba, Arsalan Sindhi alias Tota, Mobeen alias Zeeshan and Haseeb — were arrested.
The police claimed to have recovered 15 motorcycles, 10 kilogramme hashish, two rifles, five pistols and 20 mobile phones from their custody.
SSP Ali said suspects Baba and Sindhi were members of the shooters’ team of Kashif and Chota Riasat while the other two, Mobeen and Haseeb, were involved in the sale of narcotics.
During initial probe, suspect Baba revealed that a few weeks ago, the killed suspect Umair Jheengo and he had planned to kill police official Raja Khalid near Karachi Zoo.
Meanwhile, a suspected robber was shot dead in an ‘encounter’ off Superhighway on early Monday morning, police said.
The Sachal police said that a caller named Ayaz informed Madadgar-15 about the presence of robbers near Jamali Bridge. When the police party reached there, they saw two suspects who were looting a bike-rider.
On seeing the police, armed robbers resorted to firing and in retaliatory firing by police, one suspect was gunned down while another managed to escape. The police claimed to have recovered one 30-bore pistol and one motorcycle without a license plate from their custody.
The deceased suspect was later identified as Dilawar who had a past criminal record.
