HYDERABAD, Nov 6: There is an acute shortage of water at the Kotri barrage as gates of the barrage have been closed and no water is being released downstream.

The shortage of water will affect the sugarcane crop which has not been harvested yet due to delay in the start of the crushing season. The crop will need water before mills light boilers.

The shortage of water will also affect the wheat crop which will be cultivated after the sugarcane.

When Dawn contacted the control room at the Kotri barrage, it was learnt that the shortage occurred due to decrease in water downstream of the Sukkur barrage.

The control room said that only 3,860 cusecs of water was flowing downstream the Sukkur barrage on Sunday.

It said that 7,945 cusecs of water was available at upstream of the Kotri barrage, out of which 2,600 cusecs was released in the KB feeder, 2,220 cusecs in the Akram wah, 1,290 cusecs in the old Phulelli canal and 810 cusecs in the new Phulelli canal on Sunday.

The growers fear that it would be difficult to achieve the target of production of wheat in the province due to the shortage of water and delay in the start of the crushing season.
