There was no edition of the newspaper on Dec 2, 1970 on account of Id-ul-Fitr. The following excerpt is from the previous day’s edition.

KARACHI: The nation, still overwhelmed by the colossal cyclone catastrophe in East Pakistan, will celebrate Id-ul-Fitr, the Muslim festival of thanksgiving and rejoicing marking the end of the month-long fasting, with austerity today [Dec 1].

All festivities — official and private —have been foregone on the otherwise traditionally joyous Id day in memory of those killed and in sympathy with the survivors in the cyclone-ravaged southern areas of East Pakistan.

The faithful jampacking the mosques and Idgahs will wear black badges and offer special prayers for the cyclone victims. Prayers will also be offered for the strength and solidarity of Pakistan, glory of Islam and liberation of all occupied Muslim lands, including Kashmir and Palestine. After the congressional prayers, the Imams and Khatibs will dwell on the significance of Id-ul-Fitr and also express sympathy for the brethren-in-distress in East Pakistan.

[Meanwhile, as reported by our correspondent in Dacca,] Relief operations here are making a great headway with the united efforts of all agencies engaged in the task.
