KARACHI: Police on Monday launched a crackdown against kite manufacturers, sellers and flyers, detained over 30 persons and recovered thousands of kites and strings from their custody.

According to officials, these actions were carried out ostensibly after the tragic death of four-year-old Sufian who died when a kite string slit his neck in Nazimabad No. 2 recently.

The city police chief took notice of the incident and directed the force to take strict action to save the lives of children.

Police sources on Monday said that the actions were taken in Azizabad, Shahrah-i-Noor Jehan, Liaquatabad, Samanabad, Gulberg, Nazimabad, Rizvia Society, Taimuria, Hyderi Market, New Karachi, Bilal Colony, Khawaja Ajmer Nagri, Sir Syed Town, Orangi Town, Mominabad, Surjani Town and Landhi areas.

Total 32 persons were arrested and 6,687 kites and strings were seized.

The police registered cases against the held persons under Sections 290 (punishment for public nuisance), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 34 (common intention) of Pakistan Penal Code.
