KARACHI: Mayor Wasim Akhtar said on Thursday that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan had been used for making governments in the past and now efforts were on to use it for breaking the government.

“Considering the past experiences, we would like to see first that something has been done, as a political statement is not enough for this and that is why we have not rejected the offer of PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari,” he said.

The mayor expressed these views while speaking in a programme held in Korangi on the occasion of handing over of a donation of Rs9.4 million worth school furniture by DevCon, a non-governmental organisation, to eight schools of Korangi zone.

“We are ready for cooperation in the larger interest of the province, but they [PPP] have to remove our apprehensions first,” he said, adding that decisions for legislation for local government powers and distribution of resources should be made by the PPP-led provincial government, then the MQM-P would chalk out it strategy.

The mayor said the people of the province were expecting that the two ruling parties — Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf in the Centre and the PPP in the province — for the resolution of their problems.

He said that his party’s agreement with the PTI should be implemented which was aimed at progress in the province. “The MQM will make a decision according to the interests of the people,” he said.

The mayor thanked the NGO for donating the furniture for schools in Korangi. He also asked the industrialist of Korangi zone to adopt the schools so these could be made better.

The organisation has been working since 1998 in the field of children welfare, women empowerment and raise of standard of youth education in the country.

The donations include chairs for teachers, tables, book shelves, laboratory shelf, three types of student desks and other items.

Chief Executive Officer of the NGO Nisar Ahmed Nizamani and coordinator Nasreen Memon gave details of the donated furniture.

President of the Korangi Asso­ciation of Trade and Industry Junaid Taqi said that there should be more focus on the education sector.
