SARGODHA: Former federal minister Ehsanul Haq Piracha was laid to rest on Saturday afternoon in his native graveyard Mullahma at Bhera, around 50 kilometres from here. He died at the age of 85 after a protracted illness on Friday night.

The former finance minister’s funeral, which was offered at Al Qamar hostel of Darul Uloom Muhammadia Ghousia, was attended by a large number of people from all walks of life.

Piracha was the federal finance minister from Dec 4, 1988 to Dec 6, 1990 in the Benazir Bhutto cabinet. He was elected as a senator in 1985 against a technocrat seat and remained a member till 1988. He was then elected to the National Assembly in 1988 and again in 1990.

Earlier, Piracha was elected as a member of the Punjab Assembly in 1970 and again in 1977. He served as the minister for communication and works in the provincial cabinet till the imposition of martial law in July 1977. He also served as the president of the Rawalpindi/Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industries.

Piracha and his family joined the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf before the 2013 general elections. A Quran khwani will be held on Sunday (today) at his residence Mohallah Pirachgan, Bhera at 11am.
