ISLAMABAD: The district administration cancelled permits issued for the usage of tinted vehicle windows.

These permits were issued to motorists for different reasons, including the vehicles being imported and having factory-fitted tinted glasses or on health grounds. But the permits were cancelled in response to directives issued by the Ministry of Interior due to security threats.

According to a notification issued by the district administration, “It is hereby notified that all the permits issued for tinted [windows] in exemption of the provision of Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1969 are suspended with immediate effect.”

Strict legal action shall be initiated against those found using tinted windows, it added.

The director excise and taxation department and the senior superintendent of traffic police were asked to take legal action against the violators.

A senior officer of the district administration told Dawn that all the permits had been canceled. But the office of the deputy commissioner would consider constraints of motorists under which they had to use tinted windows, he added.

There are three categories of tinted windows: 35pc, 65pc and 100pc tinted, the officer explained, adding the usage of 100pc tinted windows would not be allowed except for imported vehicles.

Motorists using tinted windows due to health issues, including sensitive skin, would be asked to go for alternatives.

Imported vehicles having 35pc and 65pc tinted windows may be issued permits after they approach the office of the deputy commissioner. A verification report about the applicant would be sought from the police before considering their requests, he added.
