LAHORE: Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday held chamber proceedings of a complaint moved by former PML-Q MPA Seemal Kamran against newly-elected MPA of the PTI, Raja Basharat.

Earlier, both Ms Kamran and Mr Basharat appeared before the court and narrated their points of view before the chief justice.

Ms Kamran claimed Basharat married her but disowned her following pressure from his first wife. She said the PML-Q leaders, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, knew about her marriage with Basharat.

Chief Justice Nisar took exception to arrogance shown by Basharat’s lawyer and associates in the court and expelled them from the courtroom.

Mr Basharat denied the charges leveled by Ms Kamran and told the chief justice that he would accept any decision made by the court. The chief justice directed both sides to avoid mudslinging and held further proceedings in his chamber.

Later, the chief justice adjourned the matter till Aug 20 with direction to both the parties to appear again.

OFFICERS: Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar directed the Punjab inspector general of police to not post former CCPO Lahore Amin Wains and former Superintendent of Police Umar Virk anywhere till further orders and submit a report of an inquiry into a case the officers were allegedly involved in.

Wains and Virk were accused of having a role in brokering a forced agreement among two parties.

During the hearing, both the officers denied the charges and claimed that they had not committed any unlawful act. Virk said, “My nikkah with my wife would stand nullified if I tell a lie.” The chief justice, however, warned him against showing arrogance before the court.

CJ Nisar also told the former CCPO that reports about his conduct were not so good though he belonged to a notable family. He directed the IGP to submit within 10 days report of an inquiry against both police officers.

DONATION: Veteran actress Babra Sharif donated Rs1m to the fund established by the Supreme Court for the construction of dams.

She called on Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar in his chamber and handed over a cheque of the amount. She said the showbiz community should contribute to the national cause of dams.
