RAWALPINDI: A teenage woman died after she was trapped in a fire that erupted in her bedroom while she was asleep, in the Naseerabad area on Sunday. In a separate incident, a young man allegedly committed suicide in Dhoke Hassu.

Police said Hashmat Bibi, 18, was asleep in her bedroom when the fire broke out.

Her husband Ali Haider, whom she had married only eight months ago, was not home.

Police said the fire erupted at around 1:30am apparently due to a short circuit. Hashmat Bibi was gravely injured in the fire, and was pronounced dead when she was taken to a hospital.

The investigating police officer said the victim’s door had been locked from the inside, making it difficult for anyone else to help her.

The police officer said her husband was not home as he was working at his auto workshop late Saturday night.

The police have registered a report based on a complaint by Mohammad Ali, the deceased’s brother.

Meanwhile, a young man allegedly shot himself due to domestic problems in the Dhoke Hassu area on Sunday, police said.

Junaid Javaid, 22, was to be married in January.

He allegedly committed suicide in his home on Sunday, police said, speculating that he may have done so due to domestic issues, such as financial difficulties.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Farhan Aslam quoted the deceased’s younger brother as saying that he had been distressed for the last few days and committed suicide on Sunday.

DSP Aslam said Jamshaid Javaid, the brother of the deceased, said in his statement that his brother had, while being driven to the District Headquarters Hospital, said that he had shot himself, but did not give a reason why.

The body of the deceased was handed over to the family after a post-mortem.
