ISLAMABAD: The inspector general of police (IGP) Islamabad was removed from his post on Wednesday after the failed operation against protesters of religious parties in Faizabad, according to police officials.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police retired Flt Lt Mohammad Khalid Khattak, who was posted as IGP Islamabad, was transferred to the Establishment Division with immediate effect and DIG Dr Sultan Azam Temuri was appointed the new chief of the capital police.

Officers of the capital police and administration and being held to account after the operation in Faizabad and officers at the top of the hierarchy fear they may be removed. The agreement between the government and the Tehreek-i-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah calls for an inquiry into the Nov 25 action and for fixing responsibility within 30 days.

DIG Khattak has served as additional superintendent of police in Islamabad, as assistant inspector general of police and deputy inspector general of police.

DIG Temuri has served in the capital as additional SP, SP Headquarters, SSP Traffic, AIG Operation and DIG Security. He was the first chief of Islamabad Model Traffic Police. He has also worked as regional police officer Multan and Gujranwala.
