KARACHI: Police with the help of activists of Anjuman Imamia thwarted an attempt by a group of persons to take a Canadian citizen hostage at Markazi Imambargah in Sukkur on Saturday, said a press release.

Chaudhry Azhar Hassan, president of the Anjuman, said that Raza Ally Agha was in a meeting with Anjuman office-bearers when the group, who pretended to be Shia Muslims, barged into the Imambargah and manhandled Mr Agha.

They were apparently trying to take him hostage and take over the Imambargah when police reached there and thwarted their attempt with the help of Anjuman activists, he said.

He said that the incident had been reported to law enforcement agencies and appealed for protection to Mr Agha and other office-bearers of the Anjuman.
