KARACHI: A suspected robber was killed in an alleged police encounter in Landhi in the early hours of Wednesday, police said.

They said that three suspects were looting a truck driver near a playground in Landhi-89 when a police patrol reached there. On seeing the police, the suspects resorted to firing and tried to escape.

In an ensuing encounter, one of the suspects was arrested in a wounded condition while his two accomplices managed to flee, the police said.

The suspect died on the way to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. His identity could not be ascertained till late in the night.

The police claimed to have seized one motorbike, which was snatched from the Landhi area in July.

Three hurt in students’ clash in Fuuast

Three persons were injured when two groups of rival students’ parties fought with each other at the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science & Technology (Fuuast) in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Wednesday.

Police said a scuffle broke out between workers of the Pakhtun Students Federation and Islami Jamiat Talaba in which three persons received minor injuries.

Police and Rangers rushed to the scene after receiving information about the clash and managed to control the situation.

Three students were detained, but released later, said Gulshan SP Ghulam Murtaza Bhutto.

He said that the injured were “outsiders” and none of them had so far approached the police for lodging an FIR.

‘TTP militant’ arrested in Orangi

A suspected militant linked with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan was arrested in the city on Wednesday.

The Counter-Terrorism Dep­art­ment of the Sindh police carried out a targeted raid in Orangi Town’s MPR Colony and arrested Mohammad Shoaib, said to be associated with the TTP-Swat.

Aziz Shaikh, officer in charge of the CTD’s sectarian terrorists’ intelligence group, said that the suspect was involved in attacks on security forces in Swat and was also wanted by the police in murder and terrorism cases.

He said that his younger brother was also a militant and involved in attacks on security forces.

Five ‘hitmen’ held in city

The CTD and Rangers claimed to have arrested five suspected assassins in different parts of the city on Wednesday.

The CTD said suspect Waleed Hussain had killed a woman and wounded her daughter in Orangi Town after receiving money from his friend in January.

The Rangers carried out raids in Aziz Bhatti, Shah Latif Town and Khokhrapar areas and claimed to have arrested four suspected hitmen allegedly belonging to different factions of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

They were identified as Nizam-ud-Din and Najam ul Islam Abbasi, said to be affiliated with the MQM-London; Nadeem Zafar alias Nadeem Peter of the MQM-Haqiqi; and Faizan Farooq associated with the MQM-Pakistan.

“The four suspects were involved in targeted killings, extortion, robberies and sale and purchase of illegal arms,” claimed a spokesperson of the Rangers.

Separately, the paramilitary force arrested six suspects involved in street crimes in Aziz Bhatti and Quaidabad. They were identified as Mohammed Jamil alias Jimmy, Salik Azeem, Noman Khan, Kashif Husain, Abdul Wahab, Rasheed alias Abdul and Noman.

The Rangers also arrested three alleged drug peddlers — Meraj Rasool, M. Khursheed and Asghar Ali.

Meanwhile, the CTD also arrested an alleged gangster, identified as Zohaib alias Golden, in the Lyari area.
