MIANWALI: Just like armed forces’ fund raising ventures, the Mianwali police have come up with a plan to open the ‘Police Educator Public School and College’ by utilising its District Police Welfare Funds and donations from philanthropists.

Principal Shakeel Khan told Dawn the institution had become functional after the summer vacation on Aug 29. So far, 165 students have been enrolled from Kindergarten to matriculation levels.

He said a selection board, consisting of educationists, had recruited 20 teachers and other support staff at better salaries. There are separate playgrounds for girls and boys in the college.

He said martyred officials’ children would get free education while the children of in-service personnel and general public would be charged Rs1,000 and Rs2,200 whereas concessional fee would be granted to deserving students.

The institution is registered with the local education department while its affiliation with Federal Board of Secondary and Intermediate Education is under process.

District Police Officer Sadiq Ali Dogar told Dawn the educational institution had been built at three acres on Police Lines.

The purpose built building cost Rs26 million. The building has 17 classrooms for which the Maple Leaf Cement Factory, Iskandarabad, donated Rs9.50 million.

In the next phase, more classrooms, a library and laboratories will be built. Laboratories’ equipment has been donated by Agro Tac Fertilizer Factory, Iskandarabad. A makeshift library with 5,000 books is also functional.

The DPO said once they had 200 students, the school would be able to pay back to the District Police Welfare Funds from the earning. He said his next project was a police hospital.
