Wasa announces rain emergency

RAWALPINDI: The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) has announced a rain emergency to prevent a flood like situation in the Leh Nullah and surrounding areas, following a Met Office prediction for heavy rainfall in Rawalpindi and Islamabad from Sunday.

Four emergency response posts have been set up at Moti Mahal, Liaquat Bagh, Commercial Market and Khayaban-i-Sir Syed. Sanitation workers have been equipped with water sucking machines and other equipment, and will remain at their posts around the clock in three shifts.

Wasa spokesperson Umer Farooq told Dawn the Met Office issued a weather alert for Sunday, regarding heavy rainfall in the twin cities.

He said deputy managing director Amir Rasheed visited the emergency response posts, and sanitation workers were asked to remain alert in areas along Leh Nullah and metro bus stations to prevent water logging. He said residents in low-lying areas should remain alert, and move to a safe place as a precautionary measure if the water level in Leh Nullah rises.
