Make dandelions from yarn

Published December 10, 2016

We made plastic bottle vase in our last DIY craft and, as I said, we will be making the flower vase in two parts so here is the second part, where we are making the flowers for our vase.

There are a number of ways to make flowers, some easy, some too difficult. I have chosen a relatively easy one — the dandelion flower, which is yellow to orange in shade. We will be making it from the yarn and it will look really real. You can create different coloured dandelions of your choice, using any yarn colour. So let’s start.

Things you need:

  1. Yarn: yellow and green

  2. Scissors

  3. A stick (could be any, from a broom, a wire, a barbecue stick, etc.)

Directions

  1. Take the yellow yarn, hold one tip with the thumb and start wrapping it around two of your fingers. The wrapping should be firm enough to stay in place and loose enough so that you can pull the whole bundle off when it is done, pic 2.

  2. Keep wrapping until it becomes quite thick (the desired body comes usually between 40 and 50 times of wrapping). The threads should not be dispersed on your fingers or they will not make perfect dandelion, keep them at one place on your fingers, pic 3.

  3. Pull the thread roll off your fingers carefully, pic 4;

  4. Tie a knot with a green yarn as in pic 5, then cut it off, pic 6.

  5. Tie another knot just above the bottom of the flower (i.e.1cm) but don’t cut the thread as we will be wrapping it around our stem, pic 7.

  6. Insert the stick in the flower to make the stem, pic 8.

  7. Holding tightly at the bottom of the flower, start wrapping the green yarn throughout the stick to make it a perfect looking stem, Pic 9 and 10.

  8. When you reach the end, make a couple of knots so that the thread doesn’t come off.

  9. Cut the loops of the flower with scissors, pic12.

  10. The size of the flower depends upon how much you cut the edges. Trim any uneven threads to give it a unified look, pic 13
