Renowned mountaineer Hassan Sadpara passed away in Rawalpindi on Monday.

Sadpara was the only Pakistani to have climbed six of the world's tallest mountains including Mt Everest (8848m), K2 (8611m), Gasherbrum I (8080m), Gasherbrum II (8034m), Nanga Parbat (8126 m) and Broad Peak (8051m).

He was suffering from multiple diseases, including blood cancer and was brought to a private hospital in Rawalpindi, from where he was moved to the Combined Military Hospital for treatment on the directives of the prime minister.

He was diagnosed with cancer earlier this month. Hasan’s son Arif on Nov 8 had appealed to the government to shift him to the Aga Khan Hospital Karachi for better treatment. However after a delay of 12 days, his son was provided with an amount of Rs2.5 million on Sunday Nov 20, by the provincial government of Punjab for the treatment of Sadpara.

Talking to DawnNews on Monday, Hassan’s son Arif appealed to the government to facilitate the transportation of his father's body to their ancestral village in Skardu for burial.

@Syed Irfan Ali well tell me where in the world 2.5 million Rs can be sanctioned and given within 12 days. It is unfortunate he died but let us not play politics and blame Govt.

Bilal Nov 21, 2016 04:32pm

Government should have taken timely action. Our media should should track hidden heroes of Pakistan before its too late. There are so many old sports personnel and artists who are barely meeting ends. Instead of making popular "Chai wala" please find out real heroes. Pakistan Zindabad!

Niaz Nov 21, 2016 04:42pm

Time to eulogize Hassan Sadpara... confer him with some award, hold a seminar, or a vigil... We only value the dead not the living!

RIP great man,

haris Nov 21, 2016 10:15pm

@khan saheb : OK his son probably appealed too late but Hassan Sadpara was ill since months. It's only Cancer that was diagnosed more recently. Anyway, Hassan Sadpara has passed Rajab Shah (1st Pakistani to summit all five 8,000m peaks in the country) living in impoverishment and in dire need of assistance and help. Now help him and let's put this 'politics playing' mantra completely to bed.

haris Nov 21, 2016 10:17pm

@Gujranwala: Neither PM nor CM has ever heard of his name until his son appealed directly to them.

tanvir Nov 21, 2016 11:00pm

I am deeply saddened by the news Hassan Sadpara' death. May God rest his soul in Jannah. My thoughts and prayer for the family.

Syed Abidi Nov 22, 2016 04:37am

As a doctor, I believe his suddent death due to blood cancer should be studied for any link to his frequent high climbings without oxygen which for sure results in hypoxia and change in composition of blood.

Mona Nov 22, 2016 07:43am

May his soul rest in bliss n peace. His was a well lived life.
