The Sindh government and a Chinese firm have inked an agreement for garbage collection in Karachi, where the solid waste problem has assumed crisis proportions.
The agreement in this respect was signed between the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and Chinese company Wuzung, Radio Pakistan reported.
Under the first phase of the agreement, Wuzung will collect waste in South and East districts of the metropolis. In both districts, the Chinese company will lift garbage from house to house free of cost.
Garbage containers and trash cans will also be installed at various spots in the districts.

The waste management board plans to sign an agreement with the Chinese firm for garbage disposal in other districts of Karachi as well.
The Sindh government has been struggling to contain Karachi's garbage emergency for years. In neighbourhoods across the city mounds of garbage can be observed piling up everywhere.
There is no reliable data about the amount of solid waste the metropolis generates on a daily basis, though estimates suggest it runs into thousands of tonnes.
Much of the waste ends up in dumps, alleyways and open spaces where it remains for weeks if not longer, while some of it is burnt in bonfires that unleash a vile miasma that chokes the entire locality.
In an interview on Geo News show Capital Talk (to be aired on Monday), ex-president Asif Ali Zardari had said that a Chinese company will start operations in Karachi soon to clear the city of garbage.
While responding to a question regarding Karachi’s garbage problem, Zardari, whose party rules Sindh, said residents of the Karachi would hear "good news soon".
Former Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah had in July asked the local government ministry to outsource the job of garbage lifting to some international firm in at least three district municipal corporations.
The waste management board then issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) for two DMCs, South and East, to a Chinese firm for the purpose of garbage collection.

The local City District Government was doing a much better job, but then the Sindh Government took over, and we see a disaster in Karachi now. The solid waste management is a local issue and should be handed over to local municipalities in all the major urban areas.

I wish my city was cleaner than Singapore and Dubai. I always blame and curse the government for not cleaning my street. They have put a garbage can but it's at the end of the street, 50 meters away, I'm too busy watching cable and don't have time to walk that far. So I dump my garbage in front of my gate and ask government to clean it. My kids play cricket in a field full of garbage most of which I dumped there myself and I curse the government and the whole country for it. BTW I don't pay any taxes.

I can understand foreign companies helping Pakistan for advanced goods or services or large scale projects which may be beyond local expertise but it is a worrying sign that something as basic as garbage collection needs foreign intervention.
For the future of the country requires technology and knowledge transfer so that can make in Pakistan, do in Pakistan, service in Pakistan and in time hopefully export. China should be encourage to help Pakistan to do this and not just for ongoing profit of their companies.

wonder if if is supposed to good or bad... we dont even pick our own garbage..cleanliness is next to godliness even that is done by Chinese in PAKLAND...folks... I was starting to see that what looks like garbage from one angle might be art from another. Maybe it did take a crisis to get to know yourself; maybe you needed to get whacked hard by life before you understood what you wanted out of it.

Let's see. In Japan garbage separation is a duty of each n every household. 3 different color shoppers are used for it like green for burnable, pink for cans n pet bottles, & white for others. If someone fails to comply this and found guilty may be penalized with huge fines. Every morning the garbage collection vehicles arrive and collect such garbage from outside home collection points. Similar awareness can be provided to our people as well. Importantly the empty garbage bags are purchased by the people themselves but to reduce the burden it can be provided by the
City government at their expense.
