Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong meets PTI chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday.—INP
Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong meets PTI chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday.—INP

ISLAMABAD: Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong called on Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan at the latter’s Bani Gala residence on Tuesday.

The gist of the meeting, according to PTI sources, was to dispel the impression that the party’s ongoing accountability movement against the prime minister was somehow meant to sabotage the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The two men had a frank discussion over how Chinese investment was crucial for Pakistan’s future and prosperity, sources said.

The PTI leadership waxed lyrical about China’s ongoing support for Pakistan at all regional and international forums during the hour-long meeting. In particular, the sources said, PTI leaders talked about how China — through its powerful and unequivocal diplomatic efforts — was defending Pakistan against hostile nations.

The meeting was requested by the Chinese ambassador and also attended by PTI vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi, chief whip in the National Assembly Dr Shireen Mazari and chief spokesperson Naeemul Haq.

Insiders said that the PTI leadership explained the ins and outs of the party’s protest movement and its planned lockdown of the capital city on Nov 2. According to party sources, PTI leaders clarified that its planned siege of the city was not meant to derail the present government, the system or create chaos in the country.

There would absolutely be no threat to the diplomatic corps, since the sealing of the city was only meant to force the government into accepting a resulted-oriented investigation into the Panama Papers leaks, PTI leaders told the Chinese ambassador.

Every now and then, the PML-N leadership has targeted the PTI chairman, saying that his continued protests have delayed ongoing development projects being carried out under the banner of the CPEC. The government, all the way from the prime minister down to his cabinet ministers, could also be heard accusing the PTI chairman of delaying the planned visit of the Chinese president back in Sept 2014.

For independent observers, the meeting carried critical importance in the background of the PTI’s plans to shut down Islamabad and its continued reservations over CPEC routes. Only recently, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak had again voiced concerns over the way the federal government was ignoring the province in setting up economic zones under the corridor.

Earlier this year, the Chinese embassy in Islamabad — in an unprecedented move — had issued a press statement calling on the political leadership of the country to resolve their issues for the smooth implementation of the CPEC.

However, both the current and former ruling parties of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — the PTI and the Awami National Party — continue to claim and protest against what they call the unfair distribution of CPEC-linked investment that was flowing into the country.

“Certainly, given the billions of dollars in investment being pumped in by Chinese companies, China will always want political stability in the country,” commented a senior economic reporter, who has covered the regional economy for several decades.

And now China will also ask us to get our act together. Nothing comes free.

MNC Oct 19, 2016 08:18am

If our politicians do not show maturity, China May wind up his CEPC plan....

Our enemies want this and we are helping them to realize their evil plans.

Zak Oct 19, 2016 08:29am

CPEC will go on as planned whether PML(N) govt goes out or if IK becomes PM , Chinese need not worry, as Army fully appreciates the importance of CPEC as it is harbinger of bright and glorious future of Pakistan.

Muhammad Oct 19, 2016 08:33am

Very good step by IK to dispel Government's propaganda to malign PTI. PML-N is trying to divert public attention from their corruption and Panama leak issue by creating a false impression that IK was against CPEC.

Hammad Haider Oct 19, 2016 08:32am

Accountability and fight against corruption is perhaps more important than CPEC itself. Surely we do not want the corrupt to make the most out of CPEC as well.

Imran Oct 19, 2016 08:35am

Actually the protests are intended to sabotage democracy.

zafar Oct 19, 2016 08:54am

Statesman like of IK. Tell your friends that we will be their friends through thick and thin. And dispel any misgivings that your opposition is sowing in the minds of Pakistanis.

Ritz H Oct 19, 2016 08:57am

If the protest does not aim to derail government, then no demand for resignation! Steam already out of the moment!

J Abid Oct 19, 2016 09:08am

Protest by PTI is against corruption. The prime minister should be fair to the country and CPEC and present himself for a fair investigation by FBR and NAB.

Desi_Logic Oct 19, 2016 09:08am

@Imran

And what is corruption intended for? and what pressurizing on institutions not to investigate intended for?

MFK Oct 19, 2016 09:14am

@Imran I thought in a democracy people can force government to resign just as they can elect it. Not saying Nawaz have enough ghairat to accept the demand but freedom to protest and generate pressure on government is part of democracy.

naji Oct 19, 2016 09:11am

What he is trying to say is very correct, about accountability, fair deal, unbiased police and administration, fair selection of govt. officials, fair Election Commission, Very transparent NAB. But his way is expression all these are not penetrating in to heart and mind of people. Reason may be contradiction in his own party and his personality.

Peace Oct 19, 2016 09:11am

@Imran By democracy do you mean corruption?

Abdul Majeed sheikh Oct 19, 2016 09:11am

@Imran The democracy is Monarchy challenge Chief Justice!

wise man Oct 19, 2016 09:18am

No protests as Imran bhai has not seen the details of CPEC

Kaleem Oct 19, 2016 09:23am

@Peace Protests against corruption are good, but dont overdo it. Trust me, IK takes one extra un-necessary step everytime which helps the govt (the corrupt govt they call)

Nagi Oct 19, 2016 09:32am

@Peace Imran Khan to start such protest should resign from National Assembly and dissolve KP Government. Then he will have right to do whatever he want.

By over simplification PTI supporters just fool themselves. Democracy mean democracy. We are fooling this nation since its birth on name of eliminating corruption all dictators used same reason and do nothing. Imran Khan not different.

Wiseguy Oct 19, 2016 09:42am

@wise man ..... .... Neither has anyone else seen the details.

Pakistani tujhe salam Oct 19, 2016 09:45am

@Imran democracy or corruption of not only NS but other parties as well. If NS is not corrupt then why is he not presenting himself for accountability.

True Indian Oct 19, 2016 09:44am

why China is so worried of the loss of CPEC Project? Dear Pakistanis, you have created a mess now as all weather friend China has started showing its true colors of deception....gud luck !!

Aqsa Oct 19, 2016 09:51am

What I see is that China has already started showing their interest in our domestic politics without any concrete investments yet. They know our politicians are corrupt and money can silent them... We are becoming colony of China on our own money (loan). I want CPEC but not at the price of heavy economic burden in future. China should stay out of our domestic politics. Delay in cpec is far much better than expensive CPEC.

Imran Oct 19, 2016 09:50am

@Peace corruption is a red herring used by many to bring about their own oppressive regimes. History is full of so called reformers who then became the worst dictators. The real problems of Pakistan are education and economic growth which all parties are shying away from. So let's stop the corruption litany and start working on real issues.

THINK SHUTTLE Oct 19, 2016 09:50am

Imran khan should keep the pressure on PMLN and don't let them have a good night sleep.

Counterpoint Oct 19, 2016 09:53am

Wow. What a country?

Mahmood Oct 19, 2016 10:03am

China is just making sure its investments will be safe. CPEC is largely for Chinese benefit after all -- no matter what spin someone puts on it in Pakistan.

dr asim Oct 19, 2016 10:05am

Pak chaina friendship is from decabdes and will remain for but the enemies of this friendship will loose.

dr asim Oct 19, 2016 10:06am

Greate man meeting with great nations ambessador.

ravian Oct 19, 2016 10:20am

China trying to knock some sense into Pakistani politicians !

farhan Oct 19, 2016 10:22am

PTI is a democratic party , ruling in KPK and have presence in the National assembly. Why they are doing this undemocratic step. Pakistani people are fooled on the name of corruption.

sunny Oct 19, 2016 10:28am

The great imran khan is the only hope for Pakistan

vivek Oct 19, 2016 10:27am

Now Chinese is really concerned about their investments, all the provinces in chorus they are against their big bully Punjab brother. Now the all weather friend feel that he has invested $ 51 billion eggs in one basket called Pak.

Now why shut down and lay siege, respect the people mandate and let NS Govt. complete it's tenure and coming election highlight his all short coming's and fight like a man. Even NS resign he can still run the Govt. through remote control as he has got the majority on the floor.

To me it's a foolish act and further the image of the country will get beatings around the world

Pakistaniway Oct 19, 2016 10:36am

Moral, Ethical and Fiscal accountability is of higher criticality than slight delay in CPEC investment.

Kau Oct 19, 2016 10:38am

It is very interesting to read the fourth paragraph of your article. I wounder who many matches china has in its box?

wellwisher Oct 19, 2016 10:46am

why are Chinese more interested than Pakistanis

wellwisher Oct 19, 2016 10:47am

@Imran ---you are very right, Sir

dr asim Oct 19, 2016 10:52am

China hero from zero in thirty years and pakistan from hero to zero due to crouption

Sri Oct 19, 2016 10:54am

There is no such thing as free lunch. Pakistan will be the most debt ridden country in the world in a few years if it keeps accepting these masive loans from China without means for repayment. This is not aid.

dr uzma Oct 19, 2016 10:59am

China and pakistan are of same age, china almost super power and pakistan among poorest.

nasir Oct 19, 2016 10:56am

as EAST India company...again involving in internal matter of any nation.. this is just begning as anyhow their interest is business and they wil hav to protect their investment not the Pakistan or Pakistani rights ...

concerned Oct 19, 2016 10:57am

so basically, CPEC is more important than nation or any other matter. Even politicians are being dictated, how they should go about it. Last article I read on CPEC here was about it being similar to East India Company.

Muhammad Oct 19, 2016 10:57am

China being our all weather friend is guiding us to transform our country into a buzzing economy from stagnant one.

M Malik Oct 19, 2016 10:59am

OR the Chinese Ambassador is taking the pulse of Pakistani politics, to hedge its bets on the future leadership. CPEC is an investment, that Chinese want to ensure will be viable and protected by the right leadership in Pakistan.

This is also a hint to NS that there is a distinct possibility that IK will unseat him and take the lead in the next elections. Chinese are very astute and read the tea leaves carefully.

SDA Oct 19, 2016 11:04am

I am glad that Imran Khan cleared the confusion.

tapish Oct 19, 2016 11:21am

How can CPEC be profitable to Pakistan ,when it was awarded without any tendering or competition? China is going to skin the economy and then it will have no use for the carcass.

Azad Oct 19, 2016 11:31am

Whatever worsening condition Pakistan is in all because of our obsession with Kashmir.

Mehak Gulab Oct 19, 2016 11:32am

Ok. Imran will agree to immediately stop Dharna, if current political govt. agrees to bring Chinese Laws & Punishments such as all Currupt Politicians if proven guilty (committed corruption) to be served "Death" in front of firing squad. If want to continue with these type of democratic plundering sorry there is no choice. If CEPC is to be continued still current trend of rampant corruption need to be controlled otherwise money will only enjoyed by political class & their left/right pockets! So "Dharna" seems unavoidable & hope Mr. Imran Khan explained this to Chinese ambassador who is obviously with a pre-conceived mind set & not recognizing sincere efforts of Imran Khan who is only party opposing truly against currupt leadership.

Chander Oct 19, 2016 11:33am

@dr asim Be happy with this friendship, but this should not become a liability.

Yamuri Oct 19, 2016 11:36am

It is common sense that such a project would be good but we refuse to acknowledge that corrupt beauocrats and politicians will do their best to suck and loot money after cpec and this will be the main hurdle to cross. For this we need an honest and patriotic leadership which Pakistan is lacking..Nawaz and current political setuo is unfit for Pakistan's progress.

True leadership is needed and progressive and skilled people need to take over the government.

The end is near Oct 19, 2016 11:44am

Imran Khan is the last ray of hope for Pakistan. He is the only brave and true voice left in Pakistan against corruption and injustice.

Khan Oct 19, 2016 11:52am

China should understand Lock down is against corruption. If its not addressed these politicians will eat CPEC too. Moreover all provinces should be taken on board.

Salam Namaste Oct 19, 2016 11:50am

Chinese are concerned for more than one problems

Shaukat Ali Khan Oct 19, 2016 11:54am

protests are not against CPEC; bot indirectly these are adversely affecting progress of CPEC.

Shaukat Ali Khan Oct 19, 2016 11:54am

@jason67

No one will invest in the environment created by the PTI: Sir jee.

Siddhartha Oct 19, 2016 12:08pm

Cpec for prosperity of corrupt politicians only. Whyou others clean ones need to worry

responsible Oct 19, 2016 12:11pm

This is really thoughtful for the ruling party to why they are taking the name of CPEC and institutions to malign the opposition. They should give the justification how the money they got. Simply.

Adeel Oct 19, 2016 12:29pm

Even the Chinese know who they need to talk but our poor awaam still Ghulam , please wake up this is the time that we all going to remember forever and thats for our children for our future generation we need to build now so we can give them something. Every person needs to be out and through these incompetent leaders out and take back our beloved Country as Pakistan FIRST

mirza baig Oct 19, 2016 12:43pm

CPEC is life line for Pakistan, Period.

Ahsan Oct 19, 2016 12:40pm

For success of CPEC, the prestigious joint venture between Pakistan and its time tested friend China, we must be vigilant and not querrl amongst ourselves as we lost our earlier opportunity of Kalabagh dam for our narrow mindedness prejudiced views

Gustaakh Oct 19, 2016 12:42pm

The fact that the Chinese requested this meeting shows that they're concerned. Irresponsible politicians like IK and some senators who recently spoke against CPEC risk sabotaging it knowingly or out of ignorance.

Dr. Salaria, Aamir Ahmad Oct 19, 2016 12:55pm

For sure, a face-to-face meeting is by far, the best form of tangible communication between two consenting, educated, mature, civilized and forward looking adults. It also helps to clear any misunderstandings, misconceptions and dubious media hyped news in the air.

Hopefully, the Chinese Ambassador and PTI chief were able to present, discuss and articulate their messages, view points and opinions to each other in a meaningful and result-oriented fashion.

sanjeev Oct 19, 2016 01:18pm

Time pass protests. Not to be taken seriously

Irfan UK Oct 19, 2016 01:52pm

We need to remember that this CPEC is more important for China than it is for Pakistan and it would bring prosperity for both countries as well as our neighbours including India and Afghanistan if they were to calm down a little and be normal.

farrukh iftikhar Oct 19, 2016 02:02pm

very dissapointned with Imran khan and its Dharna's. . I had good views for him but he showed No maturity at all.

Love Your Country Oct 19, 2016 02:06pm

If PTI wanted to "assure" then IK should have gone to the embassy. The visit to Bani Gala really means that Chinese are worried about their investment and the damage these foolish 'dahras' can do to the economic plans (as it did when the visit of Chinese premier was postponed).

RD Oct 19, 2016 02:11pm

This is unprecedented that a foreign country is talking to local political parties and trying to convince them? Is Pakistan really sovereign country anymore? How can a foreign ambassador is allowed to interfere so much in internal politics. This is scary!

Suleman Oct 19, 2016 02:10pm

China is not building CPEC infrastructure for Pakistan, but expoting it from China. As all the material is Chinese, all the Engineres and workers are Chinese. All the Chinese funds are paid to companies in China all the Chinese workers are paid in China. Have you ever calculated the cost its its too much overpaid for men and material may be 10%, 20%, 40% or even upto 50%. After all Pakistan has to repay it back to China with interest. So, why not purchasing power and construction power in the hands of Pakistan.

The only thing China is relying on Pakistan is its security as China wants to reap all the benefits but don't want to put in men danger and don't want to incurr a cost of even single penny which it can't recover from Pakistan.

Wahab Oct 19, 2016 02:27pm

With so much money at stake the Chinese would surely want to ensure nobody who has any doubts about CPEC ever comes to power. How they go about ensuring it will decide Pakistan's future.

B Oct 19, 2016 02:45pm

Another 'do more'.

ilyas Oct 19, 2016 02:59pm

Since the creation of Pakistan the "Power Game" to get the power by hook or crook and relying upon short cuts has ruined Pakistan and the ordinary people of Pakistan. If look back to our history all the movements against the rulers were on the allegations of corruption, incompetence or anti Pakistan activities. In fact now we see that they all were for Power. Even the army institution did nothing. The same set of people are in all parties and same type of games. It is simply a power game at the cost of public. The best way is to start trusting the public and allow them to make decision in elections rather then in any short cuts or overthrowing governments. A good example in last election is of PPP.

PakBH Oct 19, 2016 03:13pm

Its good step to clear the misunderstanding. Well done

Iftikhar Husain Oct 19, 2016 03:55pm

Chinese need not worry about the local politics this to clean the corrupt system in the country by all the government up till now. PTI only wants the PM and family come clean on the Panama leaks.

J.Niaz Oct 19, 2016 04:24pm

PTI have to clarify who they are "for" and what parties/countries/organizations they "oppose". Helps clear confusion.

Harmony-1© Oct 19, 2016 04:30pm

@Hammad Haider - Very well said!

SB Oct 19, 2016 05:18pm

@Suleman , Your understanding is correct. To add all the chinese workforce is hardly spending money in Pakistan as the family remains in China.. They are earning in Pakistan but paying income tax in China. Big loss of revenue on all accounts...

Bharat Oct 19, 2016 05:29pm

@wise man --Has anyone seen details?

Sab Se Pehle Pakistan Oct 19, 2016 06:48pm

Offcourse it is not against CPEC. This PML-N government is trying to put a swing on it.

BOSS Oct 19, 2016 09:43pm

@Zak time will tell.

Mohammed Daud Oct 19, 2016 11:20pm

Only the ignorant and the enemies are against CPEC, Everyone in Pakistan needs to know that it a unique opportunity for Pakistan to get out of its present state of depression. Everyone needs to work sincerely and whole-heartedly for its success. We should not make it as an issue of dispute at any cost. This is in fact a great gift from our great friend and sincere neighbor China; we believe and hope it will bring a positive change in the lives of every Pakistani

Awan Oct 20, 2016 05:06pm

@zafar I can only laugh at the naive nature of PTI followers. Chinese envoy called Imran Khan not the other way around. This means Imran Khan was not interested but Chinese envoy asked the PTI authorities to meet their leader to address their apprehension. This is not the example of statesman. Imran Khan is infact bringing so much chaos that it is worrying foreign investors.

Syedz Oct 20, 2016 07:19pm

The stubborn attitude of the Prime Minister and his team towards considering themselves above the law pushing the political system into destabilization. No institution in the country can make the lawmakers accountable or bring them into court of justice. All the institutions serve the politicians.

anony Oct 20, 2016 07:34pm

Long live Pak-China friendship.

Arvind Oct 20, 2016 10:40pm

CPEC is not going to be a game changer for Pakistan, as being predicted and promised by political leaders. Military generals have already demanded their pound of flesh. Earlier CPEC route was modified to suit to the leaders in Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is left high and dry! Now Imran khan also must have asked for his piece of Pie!

a Oct 20, 2016 11:57pm

@Zak Looks like a road project is being touted as solution to all ills plaguing the nation. Isn't that a bit far fetched ? Its just a group of projects, where an investing nation will extract a good price. While it surely is welcome, it is not a magic wand.

muhmammad ahmed Oct 21, 2016 01:56am

It is time to stop negative politics in Pakistan. The culture of demonstration and strike which stops businesses and creates a lot of problem for people who are sick and who work on daily wages Where in the world an opposition try to stop a running city. Can anybody think of doing those things in any Western country or even in China or India. It is only in Pakistan where people support these kind of stupid politics. Shame on so called educated Imran Khan

PL Bakhshi Oct 21, 2016 04:39am

It seems China, with their non periel diplomatic acumen has perceived that the next PM of Pakistan will be Imran Khan and this is why the ambassador of China called at his residence. It is a well thought and a calculated move by the Chinese Government.

flipflop Oct 21, 2016 07:02am

The only way that can help Pakistan prosper is through proper sustainable urban and rural planning. Strong infrastructure including sanitation, education, and health are the stepping stone for a country to develop and prosper. Unfortunately this stepping stone is missing in our country as a whole. Years of favourism has caused other provinces to be neglected and thus lack development and continuous dependence on agriculture has further caused country advancement to slow down. I really hope that CPEC goals are achieved and is properly planned that is sustainable and coat effective in the long run as well as help create jobs in other provinces. The reports that have circulating over the net has had me worried that advantages gained from this project will be one sided as majority of focus has been in Punjab while other provinces have been neglected heavily. Secondly, considering our current government I have a feeling that few be able to reap the advantages of this project I.e the rich.

Mohammed Cohen Oct 21, 2016 07:56am

CPEC'a initial investment of 45 bilion dollars+ is just the tip of the iceberg. If Pakistan uses its creative sense of availing such opportunity, there's hundreds of billions of dollars waiting to be made. Perhaps a crash course from American magic machine of Wall Street should be introduce to know how to create money from "thin air" for such real and incredibly amazing once in a century opportunity! Instead of nonsensical old fangled and totally defunct old British Raj's banking and investment schemes, learn from the biggest magic house of Wall Street! I know from first hand how hundreds of billions are made with less than 2% of the projected business opportunities. Silk Road is a God sent gold mine for Pakistan if they can use their senses and think out of the old stupid boxes!!!

sukhera Oct 21, 2016 06:51pm

@Arvind . Your remarks are offensive, repugnant and divisive causing confusion, disagreement and hostility between people of various provinces.Your name indicates a resident of a neighboring country and if this is true , you should keep your cotton pickin hands from our internal issues. For your information, the highways are usually built using the shortest distance to the destination and not in a Zig Zag fashion which reduces the construction cost. It also cuts the travel time and the fuel cost for the travellers. This is the reason tunnels are built through the mountains and bridges over the rivers. Look at the map of USA/ Europe and its Transportation System of highways. Of course, these highways will be connected with big cities and trade centers. You try to be an expert on our internal politics but you know nothing about the people of Pakistan who always sacrifice their interests so its neighbors can benefit.

sukhera Oct 21, 2016 07:00pm

"According to party sources, PTI leaders clarified that its planned siege of the city was not meant to derail the present government, the system or create chaos in the country." if this demonstration is allowed to proceed, it will cause chaos and businesses will suffer. The people will be inconvenienced and postpone their travel plans. The government has to deploy thousands of security personnel to safeguard the people and their property which will cost the country millions of rupees. This demo will accomplish nothing except chaos and lawlessness.

sukhera Oct 21, 2016 07:02pm

@Suleman . The infrastructure is being built in Pakistan and the people of Pakistan will benefit from it. I agree with you that It would have been nice if our govt officials had pressed on Chinese contractors to use local labor.

Mubashir Munir Oct 21, 2016 07:41pm

please note that you should always work for making pakistan better but it requires hard work for all of our people, chinese people were previously in pre mao area was given sleeping pills by imperial powers but mao made them awake and are now become superpower by virtue of work by all the chinese, why we not follow the footsteps of china and work hard and talkminimum i hope we shall rise if we all work continuously

k k tiwari Oct 22, 2016 12:01am

East India Company came & ruled India , now East China Company is coming to Pakistan??
